Kim Cummings Obituary

Former area resident, 57

LINCOLN - Kim Robert Cummings, 57, of Lincoln died Monday, May 30, 2011, in Lincoln.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Butherus, Maser and Love Funeral Home in Lincoln.

He was born Dec. 9, 1953, in Atkinson to Donald L. and Dorothy O. (Rowe) Cummings.

Survivors include his father; brothers, Wray Cummings of Lincoln and Jerry Cummings and his wife, Laura, of Mons, Belgium; and nieces and nephews, Erin Wilhelm and family of Lincoln, Emily Bingham and family of Fort Belvoir, Va., Ian Cummings of Minneapolis and Christopher Cummings and Katie Mattas, both Lincoln.

Kim was an extraordinary artist, extraordinary friend and, above all else, an extraordinary storyteller.

He attended Kearney Public Schools and graduated from Kearney High in 1972. He earned varsity letters in wrestling and golf. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1976 with a degree in art.

Kim worked as a sound technician for Stanal Sound in Kearney and traveled throughout the United States, Europe and South Africa during the late 1970s and 1980s with acts that included John Denver, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, Waylon Jennings and Bob Dylan - and regaled his friends with stories of life on the road for the rest of his years.

He was the lead sound technician at the Lied Center for Performing Arts upon its opening in 1990 and did sound for big-name acts as well as thousands of dance recitals and barbershop quartet performances. He was employed at Duncan Aviation at the time of his death.

Kim's life passion was art, and he created countless works in watercolor, pencil and oil, which he gave as gifts to his many friends on birthdays and special occasions.

Kim left many dear and loyal friends and was a beloved son, brother, brother-in-law and uncle.

He was preceded in death by his mother, whom he adored.

Memorials are suggested to Sheldon Art Gallery.

Kim was the best brother in law ever! Although he never had children, he loved mine so much and they loved him! He always made me laugh out loud....I miss him.

I had the pleasure of working directly with Kim over the last year and a half. While working together we had many conversations about his career as a sound tech for many of the big names in entertainment. He recalled how he had done this tour and that one, his fondness for certain performers, and even the down side of living on the road and working certain venues. Kim's life made him what he was, and like his artwork, he was a very colorful person. He will surely be missed by those that were fortunate to know him.

To Kim's family and friends,
My thoughts are with you all. I worked with Kim at Stanal Sound and had lost touch. He was a sweet guy and will be missed.

One of the best human beings I have had the pleasure of knowing. It was truly a privilege to have known him as a close friend and to have experienced life along-side him for a number of years. I always liked his smile and honestly can't recall his face without one. I never experienced a sad moment in his presence.
