Barbara Downs

Barbara "Barb" Downs, 87, of Elk Point, SD, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 6, 2022, at MercyOne Siouxland in Sioux City, lowa, surrounded by loved ones.
Per Barb's request, there will not be any services held, in her words - "I want everyone to remember me from the good times."
Barbara Jean Beckner, the daughter of Carl and Mildred (Brien) Beckner, was born May 10, 1935, at St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, lowa. She attended Sioux City schools; however, never completed her education giving in to an early marriage and later motherhood.
Having been known to many as "mom" or "grandma," Barb held several occupations throughout her career. She was a cook, bartender, customer service personnel, daycare provider, but most importantly a hard worker. Barb met a lot of friends along the way, which made for many memories to keep and stories to tell.
On March 12, 1994, Barb joined Lyle W. Downs, of Sioux City, IA, at the Alibi Inn, located in Elk Point, SD, in marriage. From the beginning, she always said he was the greatest man she had ever met, and always wondered why God hadn't brought him into her life sooner.
Barb enjoyed many things, including: baking, cooking, doing crafts, planting flowers, decorating for the holidays, and reading. She loved going out to A-1 Quik Stop, for weekly coffee dates with the ladies. Most importantly, Barb loved spending time with the love of her life of 27 years, Lyle.
Barb will be most remembered by the kindness and unconditional love she had for her family - children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She had an extra special place in her heart for the twins, Alicia & Alyssa, whom she always referred to as her granddaughters since they were 6.5 weeks old. Barb took pride in ensuring she was present for every milestone of their lives, big or small.
Barb had a special way of showing the ones she loved and cared for how much they meant to her. In her name, memories will continue to be made, and stories will continue to be told. Barb will be greatly missed by many, and always remembered for who she was.
Barb is survived by her husband Lyle; her children, Ricky, Ronald, Rodney, Rhonda, Ranae, and Roxy, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Mildred; three brothers, Donald, Sonny, and Michael; and an infant daughter.
