Duane Carlson Obituary
Duane M Carlson, 87, of Sioux Falls, SD, passed away October 5, 2025 at the Sanford Hospice Foundation Cottage.
Duane was born in Dell Rapids, SD, to Gust and Martha Carlson on September 12,1938. He was the youngest of two sons. When Duane was 2 years old, he had encephalitis and almost died. The doctors told his parents that he wouldn't live through the night but by the power of prayer, he recovered.
Duane graduated from Trent High School in 1956 and according to him, was in the "top 5 of his class" (total of five students). He farmed with his dad NE of Dell Rapids, SD until he married the love of his life, Doris Mammenga, 1967. They lived on the farm for two years and he farmed by himself during that time. Their daughter, Deborah Lynn, was born in May of 1968.
Duane and Doris made Sioux Falls their permanent home in September of 1969 and their son, Darin Duane, was born the following month in October. Duane started working at Egger Steel Company as a welder for 32 years, until he retired in 2002. He then worked part time at Clean Finish Car Wash for ten years.
Duane's life was dedicated to his deep faith, family and friends. He was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church since 1969, where he served as a deacon, usher and was on the board of trustees.
Duane enjoyed welding, working with wood, photography, cars, playing pool at Active Generations, and spending time on his computer. He always enjoyed visiting with friends, relatives, and even people he didn't know. He always had a good sense of humor. Duane loved spending time with his family and was most proud of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his dog, Daisy.
Duane is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Carlson; his two children, Deborah (Troy) Kautzman of Mott, ND, and Darin Carlson of Sioux Falls; six grandchildren, Dylan (Alyssa), Ryan (Hannah), Megan (Logan), Luke, Noah, Kourtney (Colbey); four great grandchildren, Miller, Nora, Amika, Chloe and one more expected at the end of November; brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews. We are all grateful for having shard his life.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gust and Martha Carlson, and his brother Glenn Carlson.
Duane's family would like to thank you for your support and presence today and invite you to join them for a light lunch and fellowship in the basement of Emmanuel Baptist Church following the funeral service. A special thank you to the members of Emmanuel Baptist and the caring staff at Hospice Foundation Cottage.
