Enoch "Nick" Scull
Born: August 12, 1924 in Plano, IL
Died: July 19, 2021 in Plano, IL
WWII Veteran Nick Scull
Enoch "Nick" Scull, Jr., a decorated WWII Veteran, and long-time resident of the Plano / Sandwich area passed away July 19, 2021, 3 weeks shy of his 97th birthday. Nick was born on a farm outside Plano, IL on August 12, 1924 to Enoch Scull, Sr., and Vera Johns Scull. He entered the U.S. Army during WWII and served as a Tech Sgt. with the 103rd Combat Engineer Battalion in the 28th Infantry Division. He fought in 4 major battles including Normandy, Northern France, The Ardennes, and Rhineland. Nick was captured during the Battle of the Bulge and spent 4 months in a German POW camp. A decorated veteran, he received 2 Purple Hearts, American Theater Ribbon, European / American Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battles Stars, Victor Medal, Good Conduct Medal with 2 overseas service bars, P.O.W. medal, and a Unit Citation for Bravery. From the French Government he was awarded "Knight of the French Legion of Honor". Recently on June 12th he was presented the "Order of Merit" medal from the Ambassador of Luxembourg for his bravery during the Battle of the Bulge. Nick was one of the "Heroes of Hosingen" who helped defend the Village of Hosingen, Luxembourg. Which helped delay the German army siege of Bastogne. Governor Pritzker proclaimed June 11th Nick Scull "Day of Recognition" in Illinois. On July 17, 2019 he was honored at the Chicago Cubs game. After his military service, Nick played baseball for the minor league Tampa Bay Smokers. He attended barber college through the G.I. bill and opened up Nick's Barber Shop in Plano in 1947. He was later a foreman for Federal Huber and a partner in Plano Metal Specialties. He was a member of the Cedardell Golf Club and a 74-year member of the Plano American Legion Post. Nick was preceded in death by his parents, his four sisters: Susan (Walter) Sherman, Kay (Myles) Inman, Elsie Scull, and Vera (George) Eleff, his son, Paul Scull, Sr., and son-in-law Tom Hartzfeld. Surviving are his wife of 60 years Patricia Henry Scull, 4 children: Jeff Scull, Wendy Hartzfeld, Scott (Vicki) Scull, and Steve (Ellie) Scull. Grandchildren: Nikki (Marcos) Gonzalez, Tracee (Scott) Leitner, Summer (Josh) Beyer, Brandi (Wayne Data) Hartzfeld, Mindy (Tim) Hilliard, Kaelyn Scull, Kurt (Jeanice) Muth, Chris (Allysia) Muth, Paul (Heather) Scull, Jeremy (Diana) Scull, Joey Scull, Josh (Brandy) Scull, Jon (Whitney) Scull, Ashleigh (Tom) Russell; 27 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Plano, IL. Graveside services with military honors will follow at Little Rock Township Cemetery in Plano, IL. Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until time of services at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 30, 2021 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home in Plano, IL.
