Richard Rhey Obituary

Richard M. "Rick" Rhey, Jr.

1944 - 2014

Kenosha native Richard M. (Rick) Rhey Jr. passed away suddenly of cardiac arrest due to Ebstein's Anomaly on Oct. 11, at his home in Tucson, Ariz. Rick was born at Kenosha Memorial Hospital on Oct. 27, 1944, the eldest of five and son of Mary and Richard M. Rhey, Sr., a union steward at the American Brass Company. He graduated from St. Joseph's High School and attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a degree in anthropology. He was involved in the founding of the Mifflin Street Co-op along with Madison mayor Paul Soglin. While in college he married fellow Kenoshan Stella K. (Kate) Bernacchi, and moved to Baraboo, Wis., after graduation, had three sons (Robert, Erik, and Hans), and opened a carpet and flooring business. They moved back to Kenosha in 1984, where Rick assumed leadership roles at the Lincoln Neighborhood Community Center and later the Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council. In 1997, he moved to Tucson, Ariz., to become the executive director of the Southwest Fair Housing Council. In his 17 years there, he received national recognition and numerous grants for his innovative work in identifying housing discrimination. Rick's lifelong quest for knowledge and experience led him to amass a vast collection of books and become a hobbyist of motorcycles, astronomy, photography, chess, stamps, rare coins, and Mayan art. And even though he bonded with the desert Southwest, he never lost his passion for Wisconsin sports teams, especially the Green Bay Packers and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Rick is survived by his wife and three sons, as well as five sisters (Marilyn, Ann, Margaret, Sara, and Cathy) six grandsons, and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary (Simmons) Rhey.

Another anniversary. How time marches on but I still on occasion think of Rick and those days long ago when we would argue over how to bring peace and justice to this world. These little holes in our heart are not so easily repaired, are they? But Rick lives on in our memories.

Dear Kay, this your cousin , Carmen, just heard of Rick's death through Mary Katherine. We visited in Baton Rouge last week during which I asked if they, she or Anne had an address for you. Mary K. Called tonight with this news. So sorry I will pray for you both. Please let me know your contact info. My email is cnichol965@ aol.com. Looking forward to hearing from you. Love to you all. Carmen

Dear Kay and family,

My prayers go out to you and your sons. My hope for you in the months ahead is to continue his work so that the essence of his spirit stays within your heart. He made change happen for those that didn't have a voice nor a platform for justice. My heart grieves with yours. My brother will be remembered for bringing a better life to so many that without his voice would have otherwise been taken advantage of in life.

It is indeed very sad news to hear of Rick's passing. I met Rick in 1978 when we both entered graduate school in Madison. We were then very close friends sharing the same ideals and ideas about social justice and moral responsibility. Over the years I took the easy path and continued on in school to receive my PhD but Rick took the difficult and more important path. While I teach about social justice Rick acted and did something about injustice. Rick was, in this regard, a change agent. I will ever have nothing but honor and respect for his courage and dedication to righting the wrongs he found in our society. I am truly sorry that we drifted apart over the years but he was always in my memory as he will continue to be.
