Sandra Callahan Obituary

Sandra Lee Callahan

Sandra Lee Callahan, known to all as "Sandy," passed away in peace on May 27, 2025, a day after her 84th birthday, at Charter Assisted Living facility in Kenosha.

Born and raised in Evansville, Indiana, Sandy met Patrick Callahan while he was on duty in the U.S. Army and moved to Kenosha shortly thereafter. They were married at the Kenosha County Courthouse on New Year's Eve in 1969 and were in their 55th year together upon passing.

Sandy was hired by the United States Postal Service as one of Kenosha's first female letter carriers, and used her unquestionable work ethic, trailblazing spirit and quick sense of humor to become a beloved co-worker and friend throughout her career.

With a warm heart and wary senses, Sandy excelled as a Girl Scout troop leader, enjoyed spending time entertaining friends, and was an ardent supporter of live theater and music. Sandy loved going to thrift stores to find deals on clothing that added to her impeccable appearance and presentation. She also enjoyed playing cribbage, completing crossword puzzles and tending to her flower beds.

Despite establishing her roots in Wisconsin, Sandy and Pat enjoyed traveling the world and exploring new sights, with highlights in Barcelona and Australia. Along with yearly summer road trips, for many years Sandy would save most of her vacation days to spend the entire month of February in Hawaii.

Despite a debilitating stroke in 2017, Sandy's fighting spirit saw her survive to follow the growth of her granddaughters, attend plays, and make new friends at her assisted living facility.

In addition to her parents, Sandy was preceded in death by Elvis Presley.

In her absence, Sandy is remembered by her husband Patrick; sister Gidget Asonwha (Floyd); daughters Karen Callahan and Kimberly Salazar (Daniel); son Michael Callahan, and granddaughters Eleanor Callahan and Harriet Callahan – who will always cherish their beloved Grammy.

Please join us Monday, June 2nd, to celebrate Sandy's strength, perseverance, humility and life at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Lutheran Church, followed by procession to interment at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park, and ending with an early memorial dinner at The Italian-American Club. Visitation with the family will be on Monday at the church from 12 p.m. to the time of the service.
