Archie Burchfield Obituary

STAMPING GROUND - Archie Gray Burchfield Jr., 67, Stamping Ground, KY, and the husband of Betty Metts Burchfield, died Wed. Feb. 16, 2005 at his home. He was born in Springhill, TN on Sept. 20, 1937 and was the son of the late Archie Gray and Juanita James Burchfield Sr. He was a farmer and a member of the Minorsville Christian Church where he served as a Deacon. He was a Kentucky Colonel, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He is currently the reigning Kentucky Croquet State Champion and having won 16 state championships, nine singles and seven doubles, he is in the Kentucky Croquet Hall of Fame. In 1982 he won the National (with Mark) in New York in Central Park, 1985 and won Club Team Nationals, Palm Beach, FL, 1987 Won National (with Damon) in Newport, RI, 1987 won Club Team National in Palm Beach, FL, and won the International Croquet Tournament. He is also in the U.S.C.A. Croquet Hall of Fame, he was also an International Ambassador for the U.S.C.A. Currently there is a movie under contract about Archie's croquet experiences. He was featured in a number of magazine articles including New Yorker, Sports Illustrated, People Magazine, and Connoisseur Magazine. He was also on several television programs including: On The Road Again, The Pat Sajak Show, Lifestyle On Sports and Portrait of America. Survivors in addition to his wife include children: David Gray (Cindi) Burchfield, Mark Coleman (Jennifer) Burchfield, both of Stamping Ground, Reba Carol (Jimbo) Lewis, Frankfort, KY, Shari Elizabeth (David) Coleman, Stamping Ground, KY; and 12 grandchildren: Jennifer, David, Markus, Travis, Justin and Ashley Burchfield, Jami and Jimmy Lewis, Joy, Hope, Buddy and Kacey Coleman. Also survived by a special mother-in-law, Opal Metts and a special sister-in-law, Ruby Tuttle. Funeral services will be 2 pm Sat. Feb. 19, 2005 at the Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home with Minister Wayne Smith and Minister Tom Kelley officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, Stamping Ground, KY. Casket Bearers: David, Mark, and Butch Burchfield, Jimbo Lewis, David Coleman, Alvin Tuttle, Steve Popp, and Lloyd Luttrell. Honorary Bearers will be the Kentucky and the U.S.C.A. Croquet Players. Visitation will be from 2-8 pm Fri. at the funeral home. Guestbook at Legacy.com

Betty I was sorry to learn of your loss. I remember the last time I say the two of you at Bennie Hamptons funeral.. I know you will miss him, Its hard to know what it is like till you experience the loss. I too have lost my husband of 30 years since I saw you, November 19, 2001. It is hard to give them up.. keep busy and things will work out. I will be praying for you and your family
