Christine Dummit Obituary

DUMMIT Christine Shouse, 102, of Lexington, died at her home on Dec 11, 2007. She was born Aug 2, 1905 to Hettie Cox Shouse and Thomas Shouse, M.D. of Mt. Eden, KY. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Eldon Steven Dummit, past attorney general and republican candidate for governor of Kentucky. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Rosemary Dummit Buckley and son, Garland D. Dummit, M.D. and brother, Sam Shouse, M.D. She is survived by her son, Eldon Steven Dummit, Jr, M.D. (Susan) of Sanford, NC, her son-in-law, Ben F. Buckley III (Roberta) of Lexington and daughters-in-law, Molly Dummit and Evelyn Hardee of Ft. Worth, TX and numerous grandchildren, great- grandchildren and two great-great grandsons. She was a 1926 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a minor in German. She taught briefly at the state teacher's college in Richmond (Eastern Kentucky University) before her marriage. She traveled extensively with her husband while he was president of Optimist International from 1941-42, supported him while he was attorney general of Kentucky from 1943-47 and campaigned for him when he ran for governor of Kentucky in 1947. She was a past member of Central Christian Church and a long-time member of Crestwood Christian Church. She was an avid reader, loved to travel and visit with family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her, including her long-term caregiver, Louise Porter. A family graveside service was held Dec 14 at the Lexington Cemetery. A memorial service will be held Dec 29 at 10:30am for family and friends at Crestwood Christian Church, 1882 Bellefonte Drive, Lexington, KY 40502.
