RICHMOND - Daniel Richard Deane, 77, passed away Mon, Sep 19, 2011, at the Compassionate Care Center, Richmond, KY. He was born Oct 7, 1933, in Dayton, OH, the only son of the late Daniel R. and Emma McGowan Deane. The Deane family moved to Lexington, KY in 1944. Richard graduated from Lafayette High School in 1951, and attended the University of Kentucky where he earned his AB and MA Degrees in Art Teaching. His teaching career began in the Lexington City Schools in 1958, where he taught Art in four elementary schools. He later taught at Bryan Station Jr. and Sr. High Schools prior to his 1962, move to Richmond where he was employed with Eastern Kentucky University as the Art Instructor at Model Laboratory School. While at Model, Richard coached the school's swim team to two state swimming championships and received two Bud Cavana Awards as the top school overall swimming program in the state of Kentucky. In 1969, Richard left Model to finish his educational cycle at Northern Illinois University where he earned a Masters of Fine Art Degree in 1971. During these years, Mr. Deane was twice named Art Teacher of the Year in Kentucky and served as a two-time President of the Kentucky Art Education Association. He was also honored in 2000 as the Retired Art Teacher of Kentucky. Two of his proudest moments came after being named to the EKU "Wall of Fame", which honored his teaching excellence sponsored by the EKU College of Education. During the years prior to KERA; (Kentucky Educational Reform Act), he worked diligently to get AArt approved as essential to the education of Kentucky children in the classroom. When the Reform Act was signed into law, Mr. Deane took great pride in the knowledge that "Art was declared as BASIC in the learning process of all Kentucky children. He was the founder of the Kentucky All State High School Art Exhibition which is celebrating its 26th annual exhibition in 2011. After his retirement, two scholarships were presented in his honor. One of the scholarships was presented at EKU to assist undergraduate Art Education majors and the other at Model Laboratory School to reward special achievement in Art and Swimming. Mr. Deane has served the Richmond community in many ways. He has served on the following boards: RAAC, Mcready Manor, Telford YMCA, and was the founding president of the Bluegrass Rotary Club. In the Rotary Organization, he was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as Assistant Governor in Kentucky Rotary. He served the First Christian Church as Official Board President, church school teacher, church choir, chairman of the youth committee, worship committee, and elder for twenty-six years. Richard was an artist representative in the Richmond/Berea Japanese Exchange program, and operated the Deane School of Art for many years. While a member at the Telford YMCA, he was named Volunteer of the Year in 1995, and received the "Y" Special Service Award in 2007. He also served his country in the US Army during the Korean era. Mr. Deane was a life-long swimmer. As letterman at the University of Kentucky he swam on the only undefeated swim team at UK up until that time. He worked as Aquatic Director for the Lexington Recreation Department and was also a lifeguard and coach. Many records were set by Richard in the Master's Swimming competitions. In addition to his life-long interest in American History, Richard founded and published a journal for fifteen years on WW II artifact collecting that now has over 36,000 members and is circulated world wide. Mr. Dean is survived by his wife of 53 years, Shirley Park Deane, two sons: Richard Park (Jill Slatter) Deane, Atlanta, GA; Roger McGowan ( Taylor Suddeth) Deane, Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren: Slatter Daniel Deane, Isaac Roland Deane, Rachel Katherine Deane, and Robert William Deane. Mr. Deane was my supervising teacher as I began my career as a teacher 18 years ago. He instilled in me the value of what it means to be an educator. Interestingly enough, He is the first in a professional line of art teachers (art family tree of sorts) that now spans 6 steps (Mr. Deane, Mr. Hale, Mr. Sandford, Ms. Tucker, Me, and my former student now teacher Miss Schentrup. I can see a little bit of him in every one of us. Thanks Mr. Deane for everything.

I recognized his smile instantly. I was a member of CKYO when Mr. Deane was a chaperone on our Russia/Romania trip. His personality was very engaging. He loved being with kids and his love of life was infectious. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I was a Kappa Sigma fraternity brother of Dick at UK and although I had not seen Dick for years I still have fond memories of Dick around the frat house during our time at UK and I offer my most sincere condolences to his family.
