Edward Scheiner Obituary

SCHEINER Edward 'Ed' Charles PhD, 77, passed away Wed, Feb 15, 2017. Loving husband to Mrs. Kathryn Laube Scheiner for 53 years, he was a native of Chicago, IL, born October 13, 1939 to the late Melvin and Charlotte Bush Scheiner. Ed joined the U.S. Navy at an early age to serve his country and travel the world. Joining as an enlisted, he worked in intelligence and ran photo labs on aircraft carriers through his 21 years of service (including through Korea and Vietnam). During his service he was a founding member of the Fleet Intelligence Center of the Pacific Pearl Harbor and received the Thomas Jefferson Award in 1973 for the most outstanding special publication of the year within all sections of the Department of Defense. He retired from the Navy as a Lieutenant at the age of 37 and began a second career in education. After his service he received his undergraduate (1978) and master's (1979) degrees from Syracuse University, as well as a PhD (1987) from Michigan State University. He taught classes in photography, journalism and advertising at Syracuse, Michigan State, the University of Kentucky and Marshall University. He was a life-long Chicago Bears fan, enjoyed photography and was the coach at several schools for the American Advertising Federation's National Student Advertising Competition. In addition to his wife, Kathryn, Ed is survived by his sons, Konrad (Margaret Herndon) Scheiner, Dallas, TX, and Eric (Bethany) Scheiner, Chicago, IL; brother, James (Linda) Scheiner, Sanger, CA; and grandchildren, Tristan, Madison, Declan, Sebastian and Leo. No services are planned at this time. The family requests memorial donations in lieu of flowers to the Lexington Area Parkinson's Support Group, PO Box 4424, Lexington, KY 40544-4424 or Thomson Hood Family Council, 100 Veterans Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390.

I'm sorry I did not see this sooner. Ed took us to a 3rd place national finish during the 1986 AAF Competition. I still regret not bringing home that win for him. He used to give out "gold nuggets" for good work, so we painted 'The Rock' at MSU gold for him. Fair winds and following seas!
