John SAYRE Obituary

SAYRE John T. "Papaw", 79, passed away on Tue, June 21, 2011 at St. Joseph East Hospital. A native of Lexington, John was born on April 5, 1932 to Dorothy S. and Charles D. Sayre. He was a graduate of Lafayette High School, attended the University of Kentucky, and was a medic in the United States Coast Guard. He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 54 years, Janice H. Sayre, his four children, John T. Jr., (Susan), Greta BonDurant (Roger), Andrea Sayre-Brook (Steve), and Stephen (Kelly); nine beautiful grandchildren; three adorable great-grandchildren; brothers Chuck (Wanda) and Vince (Carolyn); and many cherished nieces, nephews, and close friends. John's career spanned many years in the broadcast industry, beginning at WAKY-AM in Louisville, and later at WBBF-FM and WAXC-AM in Rochester, NY. In addition to working in sales and management, John was also a gifted voice-over artist who lent his talent to numerous television and radio commercials before he finally retired. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, an avid reader, World War II buff, animal lover, and diehard fan of UK football! He was a cancer survivor and was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society for many years. Most importantly, John was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed tailgating, tennis, golf, caring for his pets, and spending his summer vacations on Long Island Sound in Old Saybrook, CT. He will be deeply and forever missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be from 10am to noon on Fri, July 8 at Faith Lutheran Church, 1000 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, with services following. Burial will be at Lexington Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lexington Humane Society.
