Not sure what to say?

December 24, 2012

Dear Dorothy and Family,
I am in Madison with Mother and she has just told me of Joe's passing. We have just written a note of sympathy and will post it this week.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. They say that holidays are always hard when first celebrated without a loved one who has passed. I know that you will have your family with you and that you all will share loving memories of Joe with laughs and tears.

This will be our second Christmas without Louie and it helps to have family around.
Wishing you and yours Peace in the New Year and remembering you both fondly,
Gen Busse

Dear Dorothy:

I was deeply saddened to read of Joe's death.

My memories of Joe date back to my time at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was a kind, patient, but demanding teacher from which we all benefited.

I got to know Joe on a more personal basis when I mooched rides with him to Middleton following evening exams at Bascom Hall.

I did get to see him occasionally in Lexington and of course I saw him at Academy of Pharmaceutical Science meetings.

I never did get Sheepshead in spite of Joe's best efforts.

Dear Dorothy and family - I was saddened hear of Joe's passing. Now there is another bright light in heaven with the family. I have very fond memories of our summer vacations in Kewaunee and it was always fun when the Joe Swintosky's came to Eleanor & Emil's. My mom loved receiving Joe's Christmas letter every year. I'm sure he's found his buddies and there is a table of Sheep's head going on somewhere! God's Blessing to all of you.

Mrs. Swintosky,

I am so sorry to hear the loss of Dr. Swintosky. Dad and Mom always had great times with the two of you, especially when it came to playing sheepshead. You both outstretched your arms and made our whole family feel welcomed when we moved to Lexington. For that, I will always be grateful. It is the simple things that matter most in life and I just wanted you and your family to know that you all will be remembered in our prayers.

John,
I am very sorry to hear about the passing of your father. I realize that this is a dificult time for you and the other family members. Hopefully you can find strength in knowing that the world is a better place because of the time your father was here. Not only did he influence who you are today, he also impacted the lives of students he taught and mentored. In fact, there are countless people in the world who have never even heard of Dr. Joseph Swintosky but would never the less be indebted to him because of the transformations in the pharmaceutical and medical fields resulting from his visions, dedication and hard work. Even though we mourn his loss, let's rejoice in the time he was here.

Dear Mrs. Swintosky, The Dean Dr.T.S. Tracy and the Family,
It was so sad to hear that former Dean JV Swintosky passed away. I had pleasure to spend 7 months sabbatical leave at the UK College of Pharmacy in 1981/82 to learn the clinical pharmacy project for pharmacy students education from Him. My experience gained in the US (Gainesville, Lexington) let me to be the head of the Department of Physical Pharmacy and Pharmacokinetics at the Poznan University of Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy (Greater Poland)(1980-2007).
Prof. Swintosky coined the concept of physical pharmacy already in 1946 at the UW College of Pharmacy. In 1953 and 1954 he was assigned at SK&F and R&D work in industry led him nt only into physical pharmacy studies but into biophysical pharmacy study area as well. Therefore, he can be recognized as a pioneer of such expressions as biopharmacy, bioavailability, in vitro-in vivo correletions.
He has supported a few Polish postdocs at the UK College of Pharmacy, especially from the Poznan University of Medical Scieces College of Pharmacy. I am proud to be one of them. He was granted with the honorary doctorate from the Poznan University of Medical Sciences.
It is a terrible loss for all of us and he will be missed very deeply.
With kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,
Thaddeus W. Hermann, Ph.D.,Dr.h.c.
Professor Emeritus of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Physical Pharmacy and Pharmacokinetics)
