Noble Macfarlane Obituary

MACFARLANE Noble Thomson, 82. Noble lived up to his name he had a quiet compassionate dignity and grace. He believed the true measure of a man was how he lived his life. He lived that principle every day and led by example always seeing and believing the best in everyone. Many know Noble as "Dr. Mac", their pediatrician. He joined the Lexington Clinic in 1956, as their twenty-second doctor, to start their pediatrics department. He spent the entirety of his career practicing medicine at the Clinic and contributing to the local community. He worked at Baby Health and Cardinal Hill for over twenty-five years. He became involved at the UK Medical School when it was five men and a red brick building and he served as Clinical Professor at the Medical School's Pediatrics and Rehabilitation Medicine Depts. He continued his involvement at the Medical School after retirement serving on the Admissions Committee for 28 years. Noble held various volunteer positions throughout his career: State Chairman and Secretary-Treasurer of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, President of St. Joseph Hospital Medical Staff and Cardinal Hill Medical Staff, and President of the Kentucky Pediatric Society. He took great pride in being part of the team that performed the first open heart surgery in Central KY fifty-years-ago. Noble, a graduate of Dartmouth College and University of Virginia Medical School, and served in the Navy in WWII. When he was 12-years-old he learned to play golf at summer camp and it became a lifelong passion. He was competitive and tenacious golfer who loved the sport and was always up for a game. He collapsed on the fifth-hole of the golf course from a hemorrhagic stroke and died on Sep 9, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Claire (Zimmerman), his two sons and their families: Sandy and Christiana Macfarlane (Noble and Peter) of San Francisco, Duncan and Meredith Macfarlane (Duncan, Stuart, Christopher) of Charlottesville, VA and his two daughters and their families: Lindsay and Bernie Maurer (Zachary and Wyatt) of Boston, and Stuart and Rolf Gesen (Hollis, Hannah, Clark, Isabel) of Hopkinton, NH, a sister Sara Allen of Gilford NH, a sister-in-law Shirley Zimmerman of White Plains, NY and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of his life will be held Sun at 4:30pm at the Second Presbyterian Church. Private burial will be held later at Oakland Cemetery in Sandusky, OH. In lieu of flowers, the family hopes that you make a contribution in Noble's name to a charity of your choice to improve the lives of children. Arrangements by Kerr Brothers Main St.

I just learned that Dr. MacFarlane passed away in September! I was surprised to read all about his accomplishments. When I was a little girl, Dr. MacFarlane was my pediatrician for ten years of my childhood. He was different than other doctors that I had known. I was terrified of getting a shot, but Dr. MacFarlane had great empathy for children's feelings and comforted me by making me watch the needle go into my arm and reassuring that he would not hurt me! It did not hurt at all! The last time that I saw him was when I went for my last physical at age sixteen, before I moved. I went to the Lexington Clinic, by myself, and because I was so healthy, Dr. MacFarlane spent most of the time, chatting with me about my future career plans and about his children. I am the same age as his son, Sandy, and he told me how lucky he was to have two boys and two girls. He laughed and laughed when I told him that I did not want him to call me an "adolescent." I wanted to be called a "teenager." He introduced me to his new colleague and told him what I had said. Dr. MacFarlane used to make house calls to see me when I was ill. He was one of the kindest and most compassionate physicians that I have ever known. I feel lucky that I was his patient and am proud to pay tribute to this wonderful man. I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers.

I had the privilege of working with your father at Cardinal Hill Hospital in the 70's. Dr. Mac was always kind to our patients and respectful of the staff. He was such a good doctor and the children thrived under his care. He will be missed. I keep your family in my prayers.

My first child was born 50 years ago when I was barely 19. I was nervous and Dr Mac calmed me by smiling and saying "You can raise a baby on manure and water as long as the love is plentiful" I never forgot that sage advice. He was a kind and gentle man, was loved by many and will be missed by many. God bless him and his family.

Dr. MacFarlane raised many Lexington children - and their children, too. Rest in peace. Well done, thy good and faithful servant.

What a nice guy. It's been a long time since we built campfires together, but we're thinking of you.

I had the distinct pleasure of being next door neighbors to the Macfarlanes when they live on Colonial Drive and babysat Sandy and Duncan. Then when my son John Hunsaker was born I would only trust his care to Dr. Macfarlane of course. My prayers are with the Macfarlanes and my grief is less knowing that God's loving grace and mercy are with them.

Dr. Mac was my doctor from the time I was born until I was over 21 years old and way past seeing a pediatrian. Thanks to him I was never afraid of seeing the doctor, in fact it was kinda fun to be sick so I could go to the Clinic. He also cared for my twin sisters when they came along. He was a wonderful calming presence to a sick child and I will never ever forget him.
I am sending prayers and good thoughts out to his family. I know he will be sorely missed.

My father was a partner of Dr. Mac's at the Lexington Clinic and I was a patient. The children of the Bluegrass were so very lucky to have been in his care.

I am so sad to hear of his passing and I'm sending out prayers to Dr. Mac's family from mine.

Our hearts ache today for the loss of a good and decent man. "Dr. Mac" was our Pediatrician for many, many years. We raised 4 children and went through the trying times of illness with the knowledge that "Dr. Mac" was always there to calm us in a sea of uncertainty. Our children are now older but they have such fond memories of "our good Dr. Mac". He stared caring for our children almost 50 years ago.
We extend our prayers and our hearts to "Dr. Mac's" Family in this very sad time in their lives. May Goid bless each and every one of you.

Our condolences to the entire MacFarlane family, especially our dear Mrs. Mac. Dr. Mac was a treasure who certainly lived up to his Noble name. His smile and warm personality will be missed by so many.
