Ward Correll Obituary

SOMERSET - Ward Forrest Correll, 88, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. Ward was born on January 7, 1928, to the late Charlie and Clora Hammond Correll. He is survived by six children, Rebekah (Everett) Taylor of Lexington; Kirk Correll of Somerset, Jess (Angela) Correll of Stanford, Susan Correll of Somerset, Christa Correll of Somerset and Melinda Correll of Somerset; two brothers, Blaine Correll and Richard Correll of Somerset; a sister, Mildred Correll Brainard of Somerset; nine grandchildren, Amber Taylor Jackson (Steve), Tyler (Elizabeth) Correll, Hunter Correll, Adrienne Correll, Preston (Rachel) Correll, Leigh Correll, Winston Correll, Victor Correll and Zach Correll; eight great-grandchildren, Blake and Kyle Jackson, Emma Miller, Maxwell Correll, Francis and Roman Martin, Gus and Annie Correll; and a special friend, Brenda Flynn. Ward was preceded in death by his wife, Regina Tarter Correll on June 7, 2008; a son, Vincent Correll and his wife Gwen Correll Badalato; five brothers, Ray Correll, James Correll, Estes Correll, Wendell Correll, William Wayne Correll; four sisters, Beulah Correll Farley, Charlcie Correll Carlson, Carol Correll, Kaye Correll Lautieri; two grandsons, Matthew Taylor and Simon Correll. Ward Correll was born in Wayne County, Kentucky and grew up on the Oak Hill Road family farm in Somerset. He was one of 13 children. As a senior in high school, his bull won the 4-H Reserve Champion earning him a trip to Chicago, which he often said was a turning point in his life. After high school, Ward left home with $2.67 in his pocket and thumbed a ride to Detroit where a brother and two sisters lived. He worked several jobs, attended the growing Temple Baptist Church with his siblings, and after several months of saving money, returned home with greater confidence. This was the beginning of his business success, which later included real estate development, Cumberland Lake Shell, holdings in UTG life insurance company, and was a founder of First Southern National Bank. He fell in love with Regina Tarter of Nancy, Kentucky, but before they could pursue plans to marry, Ward was drafted into the Army on November 3, 1950. After service in South Korea, he returned home with deeper faith in God. He rekindled his romance with Regina Tarter and married her on March 27, 1953. They had seven children and spent most of their married life on Oak Hill Road in Somerset and were members of First Baptist Church. Ward enjoyed giving money away as much as he enjoyed making it. His favorite past times were rook and croquet. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 25 from 5--9pm and on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 from 11am-2pm at First Baptist Church of Somerset. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 26 at 2pm at First Baptist Church of Somerset with Dr. French Harmon officiating. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery. The family requests expressions of sympathy to First Baptist Church of Somerset, Somerset Christian School, or to the ALS Association. Lake Cumberland Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Ward Correll. What a unique and interesting individual, a true character to know!
Always encouraging, joyful, and ready to share his faith. Never known a person to have such an eternal grasp on what money was and what it wasn't.
Will never forget the time he would take to give me books he thought would be helpful, and will certainly never forget his driving me around Somerset on a tour of the Ten Commandments! Well he could handle a car for certain.
I spent over a decade at Renfro Valley as an entertainer, he will always be one of the most memorable people I've ever met. I know he is taking in the Glories of heaven with even greater zeal than he lived life here.

I just found out about Ward's passing. How saddened I am for all of us on this earthly plain. He was such a wonderful friend to my Mama and Me. Marge and Debby Rhoads, The Country Rhoads. We performed at Renfro Valley Barn Dance for several years. We lived in Nashville and I still do live in Nashville. Renfro is the place we met Ward and his beautiful wife. He was our encourager and a close friend. I will truly miss his friendship, humor, kindness and just his presence for the rest of my life. I lost me dear Mama 2 years ago and he comforted me with such wonderful words then. To the family...I know you will miss him dearly. What a wonderful human being we all lost! Love you, Ward!

One of Mr. Correll's greatest achievements in life was the seeds he planted for God. For years Ward, Regina and their children would hold a Sunday school class planting those seeds to children in need. I am one of those children and would like to say thank you. You all have made a difference.

It is with deep sadness to hear of your father's passing. Ward always loved talking to everyone he met in passing. When my daughter was a toddler we were in a store in the trade winds shopping center and Ward came in and told her to pick out anything in the store and he would pay for it. She picked out a little white purse. That was back in the 70's. I thought that was so nice of him. He was a very gracious man. I am so sorry for u, his family. My deepest condolences. My most sincere and deepest sympathy to the family of Ward Correll. If you grew up in Somerset you knew him and his family. He was a man of honor, dignity, humility and strong Christian values. A man of meager beginnings who grew to be a man of vast means, but always eager to share his fortune wherever it was needed. Always a smile and a kind word he had for me and my family. I regret the situation of your passing, but you most likely have said it was just God's timing. Rest high on that mountain and fly with eagles! You deserve all that is stored for you in Heaven. RIP Ward
