Bertha Domenech Obituary

Bertha Key West, FL - Domenech Ann (Pierce) Domenech March 28, 1927 - August 16, 2024

The Lord has sent his 'A' team of angels to herald mom to heaven, she has now 'hitched up her trailer one last time and gone camping with Jesus.'

Bertha Ann Domenech was born and raised in Ohio. She came to Key West in 1947 and married Joseph Antonio 'Nene' Domenech Sr. in 1951. Ann raised and is survived by five children: Joseph Antonio 'Tony' Domenech Jr. (Lynn Hope Hughes), Rodney Domenech (Jean Vazquez), Nancy Domenech, Cynthia Domenech-Coogle (Scott Coogle) and John Domenech (Lisa Mingo).

Preceding her in death are her parents Lowell and Gertrude Meachum Pierce, husband Joseph A. Domenech Sr., grandson Joseph A. Domenech III, brothers Stan 'Bud' Pierce, and Harry Pierce.

Ann is survived by her grandchildren Aaron Snell (Elena Haskell), John David Snell (Michael Duffy), Jocelyn Domenech (Michael Holt), Lauren Domenech (Scott Domer), Caroline Domenech (Lukas Michelbacher), Julia Domenech (Timothy Eckberg), Rachel Domenech (Jason Gaus), Amber Domenech (Nat Killian) and Christa Domenech (Jay Blaske).

Ann is also survived by her great-grandchildren Olivia Snell (14), Tyler Holt (18), Gavin Holt (15), Jackson Holt (12), Casper Michelbacher (9), Clara Michelbacher (7), Ronan Eckberg (6),

Oslo Eckberg (3), Owen Gaus (7), Isla Gaus (3), Archer Gaus (1), Christian Killian (13), Elise Killian (10), and Marishka Blaske (14).

Ann grew up during the Great Depression years, and after graduation left Ohio to work in D.C. for the war effort, making cots for our soldiers during WWII.

Upon her arrival in Key West in 1947, Ann worked for Civil Service in the Navy Finance o?ce, where she met and later married her husband Joseph Domenech Sr.

Ann's Christian faith and her love for Jesus was her 'rock'. She joined Key West 'Old Stone' United Methodist Church in the early 50's and was a dedicated member until her passing. Ann chaired the Family Life committee for many years where the kitchen "was hers!" Ann participated in the Wednesday night suppers and yearly bazaars, making and serving delicious meals. She cooked and delivered Thanksgiving dinners to 'shut-ins' and drove the church van on Sundays to help shuttle folks to church who couldn't otherwise attend. Ann attended Methodist retreats and conferences and visited the Florida United Methodist Children's Home which became her favorite charity. She assisted in serving Holy Communion, read scripture, folded bulletins and counted offerings. She even had a day o?cially proclaimed 'Ann Domenech Day' in honor of her 90th birthday and outstanding service to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ann rarely missed church, even when she was camping. Jesus in the 'woods'!

One of Anne's great true loves in life was camping! In 1958, her family made their first road trip from Key West to visit her brother and his family in St. Mary's, Ohio. Five young kids, a 10-year-old DeSoto, an Army issued tent and gear was all they had on their first camping trip along the way. However, that lit the spark of a life-long passion. She continued camping EVERY YEAR after that... for the next 66 years! Ann spent the last 25 years camping solo, driving and pulling her camper trailer all by herself. Her

favorite campground was Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains. Her favorite campsite was E-15. There, Ann made life-long friendships with people from around the globe. In fact, many knew her as the 'Mayor of Elkmont'. Her family, including grandkids, joined her on many of her trips, often bringing Key West Pinks, snapper, crawfish, mangos and avocados, to the amazement of her camping friends lucky enough to be invited to the feast. Ann was featured in Girl Camper magazine, the Spring '23 issue. The magazine Editor stated in her Letter from the Editor, "One of my favorite stories in this issue is Marilou Parsons' piece about 95-year-old Girl Camper Ann Domenech.

WOW. Talk about goals. She makes her way from Key West, Florida to her beloved Smoky Mountain National Park each summer without fail. This is a person who embraces living each day to the fullest".

Ann worked for many years in the lunchroom at Poinciana Elementary School, cooking, serving and providing guidance for children. After her retirement from the lunchroom in 1977, she continued to volunteer for many years in the classroom, helping children learn math, spelling and to read.

Ann was very proud of and known for her volunteer work over the years, especially with the American Cancer Society, Lower Keys Unit. As a two-time breast cancer survivor herself, she inspired others with her empathy, compassion and shared experiences.

She took part yearly in the Relay for Life fundraiser walk and was honored with a number of awards by the American Cancer Society including: Distinguished Voluntary Leadership Award '94,

Courage Award '06, Hope Award '07, Heart of ACS Award '07-'08, Award for Above and Beyond Saving Lives '12 and

recognition for over 25 years of dedicated service to the Florida Division in helping to achieve their mission. She also held a

number of positions over the years within the organization including: Reach to Recovery Executive Board Member and Treasurer '00, Planning Committee '01-'02, Treasurer '04, Executive O?ce '06-'07, Executive Committee '07-'08, and Account co-chair '08.

In 2015, Ann was honored as a Woman of Integrity for her work with Samuel's House, a Faith Based award, that honors individuals and organizations nominated by their Board of Directors for generously giving their time, energy, resources and talents to the community to make it a better place.
