William Leger Obituary
William (Bill) David Leger, 79, of Georgetown, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, just two days before his 80th birthday, after a brief but courageous battle with liver cancer.
Born on May 8, 1945, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, Bill lived a rich and generous life defined by hard work, strong family ties, and a deep commitment to helping others. His professional journey was meaningful and purposeful, from running his own business to building a career in sales. Even in retirement, Bill remained devoted to serving his community. First by transporting students with physical and developmental challenges to school, and later in Georgetown, where he continued to give back by driving patients to and from their medical appointments. In every role, Bill brought a sense of pride, compassion, and purpose. He was known for his easy smile, his steady presence, and his unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand.
Outside of work, Bill found joy in life's simple, meaningful pleasures. He had a talent for woodturning, creating beautiful cutting boards, bowls, and pens, each piece crafted with care and often given as heartfelt gifts to family and friends. He cherished quiet days spent on the beach or fishing from the jetty, always appreciating the calm and contentment those moments brought. But above all, Bill's greatest passion was amateur radio. For him, it was more than a hobby, it was a way to connect, to build community, and to share his voice with people near and far. He discovered amateur radio in 1993 and quickly made it a beloved part of his life. Known by his original call sign KD1UZ and later advanced to a higher license and became known as N1UZ, Bill became a passionate contester, a steady voice in the ham radio community, and a devoted mentor to newcomers. He proudly served as president of both the Mohawk and Montachusett Amateur Radio Clubs, leaving a lasting legacy among fellow operators in North Central Massachusetts.
Bill's greatest pride and deepest love was for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was the kind of man who showed his love not just in words, but in quiet acts of kindness, unwavering support, and deep presence.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Hennessy and Annette Leger, and his beloved cat, Lulu. He is survived by his dear sister, Marcy Guenette of Blacksburg, VA; his loving wife of 25 years, Pamela Leger; and his daughters, Sherry Leger Callahan of Holden, MA, and Tammy Philbin of Lunenburg, MA.
He is also lovingly remembered by his stepchildren: Michael Quastello and wife Tammy of Phillipston, MA; Adam Quastello of Templeton, MA; and Jillian Regan and husband Jeremy of Ayer, MA.
Bill's legacy continues in the lives of his grandchildren who he was most proud of. His oldest daughter Sherry's children, Teagan, Celia, and Lilah Callahan of Holden, MA and his step-grandchildren, Hunter and Makayla Quastello, and Ben and Ella Regan. He will also be deeply missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who were touched by his warmth, humor, and generosity of spirit.
A celebration of Bill's life will be held on June 14, 2025, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Colonial Hotel, 625 Betty Spring Road, Gardner, MA. The family warmly invites all who knew and loved Bill to join in honoring his memory, sharing stories, and celebrating the life he lived with such kindness, humor, and quiet strength.
