Doris Roper Obituary

ROPER, DORIS SMITH - Born June 15, 1940 in Burke County, NC, passed away October 5 after a brief and courageous battle with lung disease. Doris was an active, long-time member of Salem United Methodist Church. She participated in the United Methodist Women, Christ Bread, and taught Sunday School. She enjoyed basket weaving, quilting, painting, and swimming. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, devout Christian, beloved sister, cherished friend, and blessing to those she served in life. We rejoice today knowing she is in the presence of her heavenly father. Preceded in death by: husband: William Ray Roper; parents: Jim and Floy Smith; brothers: Jimmy Ray Smith, Robert Smith, and John Smith. Survived by: son and daughter-in-law: Scott and Michelle Roper of Morganton; daughter and son-in-law: Denise and Chris Campbell of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren: Steven Roper and Zoe Campbell; brothers and sister-in-law: Felix and Debbie Smith of Charlotte, NC, Bill and Ann Smith or Morganton, and Ervin Smith of Ashland, OH; sisters: Catherine Smith and Shirley Clark both of Morganton; numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friend at Salem United Methodist Church on Sunday October 7 at 2:00 pm. The funeral will be at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Don Freshour officiating. Interment at Salem United Methodist Church cemetery will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Salem United Methodist Church Building Fund (1206 Salem Road Morganton, NC 29655) or the American Diabetes Association in memory of Doris. Kirksey Funeral Home of Morganton is assisting the Roper Family with the arrangements.

Scott, Michelle, Denise, Chris and all of the family: I was shocked this morning when I read the paper. I am so sorry for your loss. Doris was a wonderful lady and loved all of you so much. I truly enjoyed serving as her insurance and investment representative over the years.
