Gladys Cunningham Obituary

CUNNINGHAM, GLADYS - age 86 of Decatur, Tennessee, died Saturday, November 18, 2006 in Athens Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Blount County, Tennessee, a lifelong resident of Meigs County, Tennessee and daughter of the late Alfred and Eunice Haire Cunningham. She was preceded in death by: brothers, Earl, Clarence, Cody, Alfred, Jr. and James Franklin Cunningham; sister, Geneva Murray. Following her high school graduation, she began her career as a teacher at Walnut Grove. She taught at Fairview Elementary at the time it was a four room school house and has grown to what is now known as Meigs North Elementary. She was the first Special Education Teacher in Meigs County and retired after 48 years. She was a long time member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church and The Retired Teachers Association. Survivors: nieces and nephews that she loved as children and grandchildren, Frances Lockmiller, Ray and Brenda Cunningham, Walter and Karen Cunningham, Wally and Shirley Cunningham, David, Shannon and Cody McKenzie, Brian and Amy Powers, Josh and Courtney Cunningham; other nieces and nephews. Funeral services 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Oak Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Doug Brown and Rev. Hugh Bryan officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery. The body will lie-in-state at the church from 1-2 Tuesday. Those wishing may make memorial contributions to: The Retired Teachers Association, c/o Betty Carolyn Ward, P.O. Box 22, Decatur, Tennessee 37322. The family will receive friends in Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, Athens, Tennessee from 4-9 Monday.
