Joe Luna Obituary

LUNA, JOE LOUIS - born to Mary Blanche Waters and Louis Elzo Luna in Parsons, Tennessee on July 15, 1934, passed away March 16, 2008. Joe was a "country boy" and proud of it. He was "best all-round athlete" in Parsons High for two years. He worked on the farm until he left home to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He always thought he'd be a veterinarian, but his daddy (Dr. Louis Elzo Luna) told him he might as well go into medicine like he had. Joe graduated from the University of Tennessee Medical School in 1959. He was drafted into the US Army after six months of residency in orthopedics at the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville. He served a year and a half at Ft. Jay on Governor's Island in New York City. While there his first two sons, Joseph Anderson and John Louis were born. His third son, James Andrew, was born in Knoxville. After the army, he returned to Knoxville and joined Blount Orthopedics at East Tennessee Baptist Hospital where he practiced for 35 years. After retiring from orthopedics, he was medical director of The Rehabilitation Center at Baptist Hospital for six years. He served on the board of directors for State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Co. for more than 25 years. He was chief of staff at Baptist Hospital in 1985. He was an avid wood turner and bird watcher. He loved all UT sports. He leaves his wife of more than 50 years, Julia Anderson Luna; his son, Joseph Anderson; his grandson, Mason Luna Morin Coburn and Mason's mothers Meredith Morin and Shannon Coburn; his son, John Louis and wife LeAnn; his son, James Andrew, wife Kim; and four granddaughters, Julia Grace, Sarah Ruth, Margaret Ellis, and Elizabeth Belle Luna; his sister and her husband, Mary and James Burton; niece, Mary Ruth Peggs; and nephew, David Burton. A kind and good man, he was the "rock" of his and Judies' families. He will be missed by all who knew him. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 19 at 5 p.m. in the Click Funeral Home Farragut Chapel. The Reverend George H. Waters will conduct the service, and the family will receive friends immediately following the service. Dear Mrs. Luna, Joey, John & Jamie -

The last time I saw Dr. Luna he was taking a cast off my ankle (and Joey, you assisted) back when I was 20 something. He was such a good, kind man.

It saddens me to know he's not with us yet I'm happy to know he's up there keeping my parents company. Maybe playing a good round of golf with my Dad. :)

The Marsh girls are keeping all of you in our prayers.

Take care,

Melanie Marsh Stanton

I can truly say the world just got a little smaller with the passing of such a great person. I had the privilege of working for him in his practice for 13 years and he will be sorely missed. To his family I can only say to be comforted in the knowledge that his life and actions made a difference in the lives and actions of others. He was an excellent physician and great friend to everyone. Please accept my deepest sympathy.

Dr. Luna was mine and my siblings ortho surgeon for more than 10 years throughout the 1970's and early 80's. We have a genetic bone disease and use to joke with him that we caused his gray hair. We loved him dearly and thought about him often over the years. He was truly a great, great person.
