Mattie Smith Obituary

Mattie Elizabeth Smith

Knoxville, TN

On May 31st, 2018 at the age of 88 Mattie Elizabeth Smith went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born, September 16, 1929 in Knoxville, TN in the community of Mechanicsville, and resided in the community until her homecoming. Mattie was a devout believer in Christ and a dedicated Christian in all facets of her life. She was a member of Boyd's Creek Church of God(Seymour) for over 30 years, where for many years she led the music ministry as the Church's piano player. Although she never received lessons, she was blessed with the gift to be able to play music by ear and played throughout the south at various Christian conferences and conventions.

Most recently she was a faithful member of Boyd Street Church of God Sanctified, (Knoxville). Although she never married, she was loved by a tight knit family and close friends. She is survived by her dear sister, Josephine Chunn, her devoted Niece and caretaker Gwen Smith-Dubose; nephew, Maurice Chunn (Stephanie); four great nephews, Talib Baah, Thomas Moore, Maurice Chunn II, Tobias Dubose, Herman T. (Estell) Smith Jr., Athens, GA, Melvin Smith, Turan (Beverly) Smith, Norfolk, VA, Mark Steven Smith, LeNiece Smith. She is also survived by two close and dedicated friends, Regina Evans and Marcia Gilbert.

She was preceded in death by: her Father, Thomas Smith; Mother, Sallie Smith; Sister, Mary-Francis Smith; Brothers, James T. Smith; Ellis W. Smith; and Herman T. Smith.

She was a Graduate of Austin High School class of 1947, and at a time when it was very uncommon for African-American women to pursue a college degree, she attended A&I State (TSU). After many years of work in hospitality, she retired and worked as a school granny for the Boys and Girls Club of Knoxville. Additionally, she was a member of the Knoxville Community Neighborhood Association, (Mechanicsville) where she was key in helping create the Old Mechanicsville park.

Mattie was the epitome of a God-fearing women. The family's faith is strong as we know she is with her true Father. On Tuesday June 5th the family will be receiving friends from 12:30-1:00 p.m., and the Funeral service will take place at 1:00 p.m. at Cherry Street Church of God, Sanctified (729 Cherry St.).

I just learned today that my precious friend, Mattie Smith, had "gone away." I volunteered with this sweet lady in a neighborhood group and just adored her. She was sweet, kind, and had a wicked sense of humor. We teased each other constantly. She was a wise woman and a true Christian who walked the walk. I will miss this glorious soul but Heaven is a sunnier place with Miss Mattie in residence. Rest in Peace, Sweet Lady.
