MICHAEL MARKWELL Obituary

MARKWELL, MICHAEL (MIKE) - 51, passed away April 19, 2014, after a tragic drowning accident in Cocoa Beach, Florida, while on vacation with his wife, Maria. He was a Louisville native, had attended University of Louisville, and was an avid Cardinal and sports fan. Mike had worked his way up in the restaurant business from server and sous chef to management at several Louisville restaurants. His most recent and prestigious accomplishment was managing partner for Carrabba's Italian Grill in Knoxville, Tennessee. Under Mike's leadership, the restaurant earned high marks for service and quality. Just as important, he was admired and loved by his large staff of young people, in whom he inspired high standards. They regarded him as a father figure, mentor, and friend. His wife, Maria Brichetto-Markwell, was the love of his life, and they cherished the past five years of happiness. On the day of his death, Maria said her husband was happy both personally and professionally and was at peace. Mike was much loved and treasured by his large family. To honor this passionate, respected, and beloved leader, a celebration of Mike's beautiful life will be held at Carrabba's Italian Grill in Knoxville on Monday, April 28, at 9:00 p.m. A traditional memorial will be today at United Methodist Church in Middletown, Kentucky. Mike is survived by his wife, Maria Brichetto-Markwell; and three step children, Claire Brown, Thaddeus Brown, and Alexander John Brown, in California. Also his father, Lee R. Markwell (Marte); and mother, Evelyn Morissey (Bill) of Louisville; and five sisters, Jeanne Markwell, Cindy Marquel, Susan Shaw (Warren), Cindy Atwood (Keith), and Sheri Boyer, all of Louisville. Also four brothers, Robert Morrissey of Carlisle, Ohio, David Morrisey (Evelyn) of Leonardo, New Jersey, Paul Markwell (Shari) of Louisville, and David Markwell (Donna) of Colorado. Survivors also include his five aunts, four uncles, four nephews, and three nieces.

Dearest Maria,
My name is Tammy. I was on vacation the same time you and your husband were. I am the nurse who help perform CPR on your husband. I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I have been thinking about you everday since you left. You told the police that I was your sister so they wouldn't make me leave. I wish you peace. May God bless you and your family in this most difficult time in your life.

Everybody had a good time at Carrabba's Monday night . It was clear that Mike was special and will be deeply missed . It felt strange being in the restaurant and not hearing Mike saying "I need food runners or salad runners.". It was nice meeting Mike's father who Mike took after when it comes to looks . We will all miss you Mike and again our thoughts and prayers go out to the family .
