Vicki Johnson Obituary

JOHNSON, VICKI M. - age 67, of Knoxville, TN passed away on Monday, April 26, 2010 as the result of recurrent lung cancer. Born April 10, 1943 in Bainbridge, NY, Vicki graduated from Bainbridge Central High School in 1961 and Syracuse University in 1965. She earned an M.S. and Ed.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Tennessee in 1970 and 1972, respectively. She co-authored two books, published in 1972 and 1973 and translated into 9 languages, on practical methods of teaching severely retarded children. Vicki served as Executive Director of the Knox County Association for Retarded Citizens (KCARC) from 1976-2003. During her tenure, the first preschool program for mentally challenged children in Tennessee was started, as well as the first comprehensive community recreation program for mentally challenged adults in Tennessee. She also supervised the development of employment opportunities for the mentally challenged, including KCARC's 36,000 square foot factory, which employs 125 developmentally disabled adults, and community employment for 100 others each year. Under her leadership, group home and apartment living situations were developed for hundreds of developmentally disabled residents. An accomplished athlete, Vicki took up running at the age of 38. She ran 13 consecutive Boston Marathons, finishing 3rd in the Masters Division at age 46. She ran in mountains all over the U.S., competing in ultra-marathons from 50k to 100 miles and held U.S. records at various distances. In 1988 she ran the entire 70 miles of the Appalachian Trail through the Great Smoky Mountain National Park in 18 hours and 50 minutes, a record at that time. Vicki also finished first in the women's division of the Old Dominion 100 mile Endurance Run in 1988, earning one of her 5 awards for completing a 100 mile ultra-marathon in less than 24 hours. She was inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1989. Her more recent interests have included building bluebird houses, which now hang from Arlington TX to Bainbridge NY, and maintaining 60 acres of wildlife habitat along the French Broad River in east Knox County. Vicki is predeceased by her parents, Dr. Lloyd and Dorothy Johnson of Bainbridge, NY. She is survived by Audrine Honey of Knoxville; sister and brother-in-law, Jerri and Gerald Niles of Powhatan, VA; nephews and their wives, Tom and Patty Niles of Carson, VA, and Joe and Kellie Niles of Powhatan, VA; and great-niece and great-nephew, Saarah and Ethan Niles of Powhatan, VA. In accordance with Vicki's wishes, no services are planned. Memorial donations may be made to KCARC, 3000 N. We had so many great days and nights at the lake property that Vicki and Jean owned. You could always count on vicki to bring a big ole bag of taters in her van, drag them out and throw them on the fire. I remember helping to build the dock out there and laughing til I had tears. I have great memories of those times. Thanks to Vicki.

I recall Vickie was always a sports person when she grew up in Bainbridge.
However, she did so much more to make
the world a better place and really
made her life make a difference. Her
parents would be so proud of her.
My sympathy goes out to the family.

My experience with Vicki was but a brief hello back 25 years ago in Nashville,TN. I was runnning a 5K at Metro Center. A running friend of mind pointed at this women and said " that women is one of the top female ulra runners in the country". I was told she ran 100 mile races and I was very impressed. I did not know someone could run 100 miles. It sparked my interest and I now have been running ultra's for over 20 years and hold the American record for age group 50 and over for 100 miles on the road. Vicky herself was not aware of all her positive influences. I am sadden by the loss but I rejoice at having had the opportunity to meet such an extraordinary women.
My thought are with the family.

See you on the trails,

Vicki was a great runner. I will never forget my first KTC race which was back in late 60's. it was a 15K and she entered the men's race because the ladies race was too short. She was 2nd behind Bob Godwin. i finished 3rd and remember her passing me.

I was eleven years old when Vicki entered my life. She moved next door to my family's home and she and I became instant friends. I ran cross country during high school and she and I would take early morning and late afternoon runs together. Vicki was always there for me as I grew from a pre teen to a teenager. She was a terrific neighbor, friend, and confidant. She was beautiful inside and out. I love you Vicki.

There are few people in the world who influenced me more than Vicki. I was about 16 years old when she became my next door neighbor in Knoxville. She was 10 years older than I. She was from New York. She was smart and beautiful and high energy and compassionate. She was sane when I was not and she filled the much-needed role of "mentor" in my life. She gave me a calm and mature perspective that was outside my small, emotionally-charged world. She gave validation to views (maybe just "suspicions" at that age) that I already had and that I needed to know were rational responses to a world that wasn't quite perfect. I'm not sure where I'd be without Vicki; and I am so, so sorry I did not tell her this when there was still time. Another lesson she has given me. I am also sorry for all of you who are missing her. She really was (is) bigger than life and I guess that should be consolation in itself. Heal well.

As a member of the great class of 1961, I write this with an empty lose but a heart blessed to have Vicki as my friend. She and I shared the love of sports. We participated in all sports and were each considered to be highly skilled athletes. The last time I saw Vicki was in 1976 while I was competing in ABC's Superstar Competition. We talked about our good times growing up. WE learned to water ski at her parents place on the river; we played basketball many days after school in her drive way against two of the fellows from our class; we were recruited by a group of teachers to play on their summer softball team that won three New York STate Championships; we both completed our Doctoral programs in 1972 and became positive role models in our field of education. I again have been blessed to have her as my friend.

Vicki was a good friend and a great mentor. Her contributions to the field of developmental disabilities were far-reaching and an inspiration to those of us who follow in her footsteps. She will long be remembered for the legacy she created at the Knox County Arc. She will be missed both personally and professionally by many, many people.

I remember Vicki from high school where she was a hero to me. I had polio as a child, but I wanted to bowl. Vicki was an encouragement and an inspiration to me. I learned to bowl and enjoyed it for many years. I don't think she even knew how I worshiped her abilities from afar. My deepest sympathies to those who loved her.

Dear Audrine,
I feel a great sadness and profound loss at Vicki's passing. She was a dear student, a dear friend and an inspiration for my running which I started only after retiring from teaching. She encouraged me and told me I could run as long as I wanted. whatever age.
It was wonderful to see her on rt 206 as I was doing a run the summer before last and I was looking forward to getting together that last summer. That never happened and I will carry regrets for not having made a greater effort to contact her. I did check for a phone listing but no luck there and never knew where her house was. After her Christmas letter, I felt already the loss and disappointment of not seeing her that summer...her last.
Vicki was special and I know how fortunate I was to know her ...to keep touch with her...and to be her friend all of these years.
God bless you, Jerry and Gerry and all of Vicki's loved ones. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to each of you. Judy Niles

Vicki was my best friend in Bainbridge from 1st-4th grade. I only saw here twice after then but have kept the memories of our great times in my memory since then. My husband and I passed through Bainbridge on our trip across country a couple years ago. We saw Vicki's parents home and it still looked the same. Even the color hadn't changed! I planned on visiting Vicki in Knoxville on our way home to CA but lost her contact info and had to rush home for my sister's hip surgery. I'd love to hear from her sister Jerri. I was amazed to read of Vicki's accomplishments.
