John Sawyer Obituary

COLDWATER, Mich. - John F. Sawyer, 87, of Lake Lavine, Coldwater, Michigan, died on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2025.

He was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on June 21, 1938. He was the only child of Elmer and Helen (nee Henschen) Sawyer.

He attended Harrison Hill Elementary School and South Side High School and graduated from St. Francis College with BA and MS degrees.

For 37 years, he taught English and coached a number of sports in FWCS. In 2001, he moved to Lake Lavine, Michigan, and substituted at Fremont High School, Indiana, for more than 10 years.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Joey.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Rebecca (nee Sebert); sons, Douglas, Sean and Daniel; daughters, Angela and Nicole; and 16 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025, at Beams Funeral Home, Fremont, Indiana, followed by a eulogy and praying of the rosary.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Black Pine Animal Sanctuary, Albion, IN 46701.
