SHIPSHEWANA - Robert "Steve" Bowen, 82, of Shipshewana, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly at 7:43 a.m., on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024, in Shipshewana. He had been battling cancer since 2016.
He was born on Jan. 4, 1942, in Sturgis, Michigan, to Robert "Bob" B. and Elizabeth L. (Morgan) Bowen.
On June 25, 1960, at Scott Methodist Church, he married Sharon Weaver, and she survives.
Survivors in addition to his wife are two daughters, Andrea J. (Dave) Engebretson, of Saint Louis, Missouri, and Lisa M. (Steve) Bowen-Slaven, of Shipshewana; son, R. Kevin Bowen, of Cicero, Indiana; two grandsons, Mitchell (fiancée Mackenzie) Slaven, and Mason Slaven; and granddaughter, Elyse (fiancé Zach) Engebretson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Michael Bowen.
After graduating from Shipshewana-Scott High School in 1959, Steve attended Tri-State College. He graduated in 1966, with high honors, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering.
He had a successful engineering career starting at Spreuer & Son (1957-64); The Boeing Co., Seattle, Washington, (1966-68); Eastern Airlines, Miami, Florida, (1968-70); Duo-Therm, LaGrange (1970-76); Bendix Corp., South Bend (1976-80); Owen's Classic, Sturgis, Michigan, (1980-87); Founder of Fabex Inc., Elkhart (1987-91); and Founder of CNC Laser, Howe (1991-2018). He loved his career as an engineer.
When he was not at work, Steve would enjoy playing golf and was a charter member of the Shipshewana Golf League (1972).
He loved to serve in his community. Throughout his lifetime he coached Little League baseball, served on the Westview School Board, supported the Shipshewana Lake Conservation Club, and served on the LaGrange County Planning Commission.
Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2024, at Miller-Stewart Funeral Home, 1003 S. Main St., Middlebury.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2024, at Keightley Cemetery, 3950 N. C.R. 850 W., Shipshewana.
Services will be conducted by Josh Watts.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
