Nathan Peters Obituary
Nathan "Nate" George Peters, 76, of Plummer, Idaho, passed away surrounded by family at home on January 4, 2025. Born August 31, 1948, in Chico, California, to George and Helen Peters, Nate was a man known for his strength, sharp wit, and unwavering sense of purpose.
He spent his early years in Chico before moving to Pacheco in the Bay Area at age 14. During his high school years, Nate became a champion boxer, graduating from Mt. Diablo High School in 1966-a fighter both in and out of the ring.
After graduation, he headed to Hawaii to work in roofing alongside his brother. While there, he developed a passion for diving and spearfishing, skills passed on to him by a local friend named Bert. Hawaii also brought him something even greater-Sharon Kelly, the woman he would spend the rest of his life with. They married on December 14, 1968.
Nate and Sharon moved to California, living in Napa and Martinez, where they welcomed their first two daughters. It was during this time that Nate began his career in construction through the Carpenters Union-setting the foundation for decades of hard work and craftsmanship. His career took the family north, including to the Washington coast and Spokane, where their third daughter was born. They eventually made their home in Chattaroy, WA, raising their family and building deep, lasting friendships.
An avid outdoorsman, Nate had a passion for hunting and spent many years running hounds throughout the region until hound hunting was banned in Washington. In August 2000, with their children grown, Nate and Sharon moved to their forever home in Plummer, Idaho. He retired in 2012 after an accomplished career building bridges and contributing to major projects such as the Hanford Nuclear Plant, St. Joseph's Dam in the Columbia Basin, Bridgeport, Franklin Park Mall, and NorthTown Mall, among many others.
Nate had a larger-than-life personality. He was charismatic, quick with a joke, and genuinely loved connecting with people. He never met a stranger. Whether at hunting camp, the local tavern or a family gathering, he brought energy, humor, and heart to every room. He also served as Vice President of Safari Club International for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon; daughters Diane (Rich) Perrigin of Kailua, HI; Leah Peters and Matt Turner of Ewa Beach, HI; Leann (Charles) Cunningham of Ewa Beach, HI; and hanai daughter Alohanapua (Grant) Shimabukuro of Kaneohe, HI. He is also survived by his brother Nick (Barbara) McCarroll of Bend, OR; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Helen, and brothers Alan Peters and Jack McCarroll.
Rather than a formal memorial, Nate's family will be hosting a celebration of life in the spirit of the annual BBQs he loved. Please join them on August 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at their home in Plummer. Bring your favorite side dish-and your favorite Nate stories.
