I want to say I am sorry for never finding out about Coach Lugo's passing. There's one memory that sticks to me to this day. I was running late from 5th to 6th period. I had to cross the PE gyms I order to get to my 6th. Coach Lugo made us do push ups for being late. That memory always stuck to me. Just one little interaction. I was fortunate to attend CPHS while he taught there in the early 2000s. Rest in Power Coach!

Raymond K. Brown, CPHS, Class of 79'. I first met Coach Lugo in the summer of 76'. He was the Defensive Coordinator for the football team I played on, and my teacher. I have always remembered the type of person he was. He was a great example of a good Christian. He lived to serve others. He treated everyone with respect. Coach Lugo was my favorite teacher, and one of the best people I have ever known. Coach Rudy Lugo left a legacy of people to hopefully follow his example.

Dear Mr Lugo
Thank you for everything you did for everyone while we were all blessed to have you in our presence.
Teachers don't usually go out of their way to make a student feel better or push them to be a better person, student or sport player.
Thank you for pushing me.

I just found out about Mr. Lugo's passing. I am extremely sad about the news and hope his son chris is doing ok. I'm sure they don't remember me since chris and I were class of 2001, but I sure remember them specially Mr. Lugo. All I can say is that he was a great inspiration to everybody that came his way, including myself and would always make people want to be the best they can.

I was very sorrowed to hear of our Coach Lugo's passing. I had recently returned home to my parents in Canoga Park and found some old wrestling trophies. Remembering the old days, I was told by my mother that Coach had recently passed. If Coach hadn't pulled this fat, shy boy out of the gym line and instilled his faith, discipline and fairness in me, I have no doubt where my life would have gone. I will miss him deeply.

To Sr. Lugo's family...I read of his passing months ago and haven't had the ability to admit he's really gone...I still can't believe it but I wanted to write this down and let you all know that he is and will always be SORELY missed. I haven't been back to CPHS for a very very long time but Mr. Lugo has always been one of the primary people I think of from that period. I think of him often, even now. May G-d rest his soul. My heartfelt condolences go to all of his family and friends.

Dear Lugo Family,
I was deeply saddened when I fisrt heard that your father, coach Lugo had passed. Words will never ever express how great your father was to all in the Canoga Park community and at CPHS. The out pouring of love showed not only on Friday's Home Comming game, but at his funeral as well, should be a testament to all the lives that your father has touched in one way or another. His spirit and memory will always live in me and those that he ever came in contact with. The both of you should be very proud and honored to have had him as a father.
With much love,

I graduated from Canoga Park H.S. in 1976. I had Mr. Lugo for Spanish in 10th grade and he was a great teacher and liked by so many students. I thought he was so good looking and of course had a crush on him. Even though it's been so many years, I will remember him.

Christopher,
I wish I had met you. I met your father in the late 1970's when he was a youth minister for my mom who was the director of religious education at Our Lady of The Valley. I was just a kid and always had to hang around him when he was around. I was always in awe of him. He was like family to us and was invited to all of my families special occasions. In fact he attended my confirmation at Our Lady of Malibu in 1979. He gave me a set of rosary beads that I still have and use. They hang on my bedroom door. I have never used any other rosary but the one he has given me. He was so excited for my mom when I was accepted as a student at Crespi. Because of his influence on me I played football at Crespi. I then went on and became an assistant varsity football coach at Crespi under Bill Redell from 1985 to 1988. I am glad you can continue that football coach bug that your father has so well given us. I wish I could have sat down with your father and just talked football again. But I know that on that great day we will all meet again in that one great stadium.
God Bless,

Dear Chris -- you may not remember me. My name is Linda Wilson; you were a friend of my son Scott, or Richard, Wilson, when we lived over on Schoolcraft Street back in the late 90's. You use to come over and we would talk football -- at the time, you were hoping to play for UCLA. I just wanted to let you know how sorry I am, and Richard and Michael (Richard's brother), are about your dad. Richard now lives in Jackson, California, and Michael lives in Australia, but I still live in Canoga Park, and actually do remember you and your dad often, especially now during football season. I'm glad you are continuing your dad's legacy. I'll think of you often, especially tomorrow, at the Veteran's Day game tomorrow at the Rose Bowl. If you want to talk, to remember old times, you can email me at [email protected]. If you don't remember me or my sons, please know that I remember you, and Richard does too. Linda

Coach Lugo was the most amazing man I have ever known. He was always there for me when I needed to talk or just sit in silence at my desk during lunch. He knew when to ask if I needed help and when to just let me stare into space. In college I wrote a few essays about him and why he was the teacher that influenced me most. I was in his Spanish class, I was his TA and even tried to play football for him, he was a great man to put up with me and my bestfriend. Coach I have missed you since the day I graduated in 1991 and now today I am so sadden by this loss. I know right now he would be telling me to stop crying get it together. Thanks for always looking out for us. Even when he yelled we knew it was because he cared. He was the only teacher I ever knew who would apologize for yelling at us.
I love you Rudy Lugo.

I had the privilege of knowing Coach Lugo as both a student and colleague.
Before I graduated Canoga in '93, I was lucky enough to help Coach with the wrestling team stats for three years. I have many fond memories of watching a teacher who somehow managed to combine a loving faith with hard as nails ferocity and old-school masculinity with a modern sense of fairness and justice. He always saw us as ourselves, and not as our external labels (white, hispanic, rich, poor, smart, trouble).
When I returned to Canoga as an agriculture teacher, Coach Lugo came to my aid many times with a little manpower from the football team, a stern word to a student who was giving me trouble, or a pat on the back as he passed me in the hall.
I will think of him often as I raise my own children. He was the teacher, friend, and father we all aspire to be like, and he will be dearly missed.
Love you Coach...

Chris Lugo and Family
Canoga Park High School
6850 Topanga Canyon Blvd
Canoga Park, California 91303
Dear Chris and Family,
My family has had yours in our prayers for many months since we learned of Coach Lugo’s fight with cancer. We were sad when we learned Coach passed away and are truly sorry for your loss.
By way of background, I was a tenth grader entering Canoga when Coach Lugo was retained by Coach Matheson to be part of the 1969/70 Canoga Park Hunter Football coaching staff. My brother, John, who wore #80, was a senior at that time and was one Rudy’s first players. John later, in the early seventies, coached a couple of years with Rudy, as a walk-on assistant. John was very fond of your dad and when he learned of his passing, John reminded me of the goodness and strength of your Dad and how positive he was in both our lives.
I had the great fortune to play for your dad as a junior and senior. As a senior he was my position coach – linebackers – I wore #60 that year 1971/72. As a junior, my head coach was Bob Binder. He arrived for his first year at Canoga after Coach Matheson left for a coaching job at West Los Angeles College. Coach Binder tragically died from a massive heart attack two weeks after the 1970/71 season ended. Needless to say, Coach Binder’s death had a significant lasting impact upon my fellow teammates, the coaching staff, the community, and me. The next year Al Calce was promoted to head coach. Jim Fazio, who the players fondly nick named Sergeant Carter, after the drill sergeant, Sergeant Carter on the Gomer Pile show, Fazio looked just like him, crew cut and all, seemed to yell the same, and was just a mean!, and your dad as assistant coaches (among others that I forget). We dedicated that year, 1971/72, to the memory of Bob Binder.
Bob Binder’s favorite saying was this:
“Life is tough. You get knocked down, you pick yourself up, you get knocked down you pick yourself up, you pick yourself up.”
I wanted to tell you about Bob Binder because Rudy Lugo touched all of us who played for him.
At the time of Coach Binder’s death, your dad’s faith and goodness were ever present and helped many young 16 and 17 year olds come to grips with life and death and the confusion we felt. His quiet words of reassurance were like strong hands holding all of us together, giving us the emotional stability we all needed in order to cope with Coach Binder’s tragic and sudden death.
Your father also inspired me. While he was a man of few and quiet words, his strength of character was present as if a aura radiated from him. That intangible engagement fed into his players and we were able to work and perform at levels that we once felt unachievable. His invisible hand was with us on the field of play, and helped us do our jobs. His humility taught us to appreciate the moments of our success and appreciate unselfishly the successes of our teammates.
Most of all, his faith taught me, as young man without a religious upbringing, that life is not selfish but precious. That goodness begets goodness here and after.
I will always pick myself up, and will always recall the goodness of your father.
May he rest and peace, I am confident that he his sitting with Coach Binder watching out for all our Canoga family. Canoga pride lives forever!
With condolences to you and your family.

Rudy was one of the most influential men in my youth. As my wrestling coach, he taught me about so much more than wrestling, mainly by his example. He was by far one of the most selfless individuals I have ever had the pleasure of being related to, and I say related because we were family. He was a father, a big brother, an uncle, a mentor and always a friend. Those that knew him will miss him, those that didn't will know from the messages in this guest book that Rudy was loved. That is his legacy, that he left us all better for knowing him.

It's amazing how our personalities are formed at an early age. I met Rudy Lugo in 4th grade and he was everything I've seen him described as in the messages in this guest book.
My family moved to Canoga Park from a small town in South Dakota in 1956. I attended Sunny Brae Avenue School where I was a classmate of Rudy's. (Please see photo submitted with this entry) I was the new kid in school and not readily accepted into the social circles and playground games-- except by Rudy. He treated me as an equal from day one. I quickly learned that when we chose up sides for kickball or sock-o, I wanted to be on Rudy's team. I was new at these games and he taught me to play without belittling. If I did well he'd pat me on the back. If I did poorly he'd show me the right way, always with the idea that if I did better the team would do better. He always played to win, yet he was always fair, always a gracious winner or loser.
Rudy had no prejudices. He and I had a friend named Alan Shapiro. We hung out at each other's houses, traded baseball cards and did the things that 9 year old boys do. Imagine that, a Jew, a Latino and a white kid playing together without regard to backgrounds. Today someone would make a big deal out of our "diversity" and "tolerance." Back then we were just being friends.
At Canoga High I ran track while Rudy played baseball and football. He lettered, I didn't. He was such a fine athlete, it was a pleasure watching him on Friday nights, catching passes, knocking down opposing players and shouting along the side lines to fire up his teammates. Such an inspirational player!
Along with Janet Strauss, also a member of the Canoga High Class of 1965, I visited Rudy 16 months ago. It was obvious he was in the fight of his life, but the fire was still in his eyes, the spirit strong. He's lost that fight now, but I believe if he could speak to us he'd simply remind us of Canoga's motto: "Be Strong."
God bless you, Rudy, for all you meant to me and all those kids you taught.

Last night my brother Joe told me that Mr. Lugo had passed on and I immediately felt a sense of deep loss. I started to recall all the wonderful memories in my life that he was a part of and it brought a huge smile to that face. To know him was to know the way we should all live our lives. I will never forget Mr. Lugo. Love you and miss you Mr. Lugo.

I had known him for many years, not only at CPHS but growing up in the Guadelupe Youth Center and OLV church community. Rudy was an inspiration to all that were lucky enough to be touched by his sincerity and joy of life. I met him in '72 as a freshman when he replaced Ms.Medina for Spanish class and the first coed PE class which only had two girls on it... my friend Katie Tostado and myself, from then on I knew life at CPHS would be a positive one. He would walk me to my classes & we would talk. He was always upbeat, knowing that most of our lives at that time were rough, having grown up in the barrio was hard and back then we had minimal knowledge of the resources available to us for advancement in our futures. He was an inspiration to all and will be deeply missed. My condolences to his loved ones in their time of grief.

What more can I say about someone who touched my life 30 years ago and always continued to be present in mind and spirit. More in the recent past than when I was in school and saw him every day, Coach Lugo remained close at heart as someone who made everyone in the room or on the field feel warmth and love in a world where giving one’s self is not the typical or easy thing to do. Although I returned to school to see Coach Lugo only for the first few years after graduating, I fondly recall the life lessons and warm times with him.
The picture of Coach Lugo with his son in the locker room hits really close to home with the knowledge that Chris continued the coaching tradition and because of our own sons now in high school. I loved the comment from the Reseda coach about wanting Rudy to coach his kid. I had told my sons the story of my high school football and wrestling coach and I hope I did a good job of describing what he meant to me and all of his students. When I was in school I thought he was preparing me physically for the game or the match. I have come to realize that he prepared me mentally and emotionally to raise my family and share of myself as much as I can.
The comments from current and former students, their families and faculty are a testimony to Coach Lugo’s legacy. He spent his life giving to others and I feel privileged to have known him, if only for a short period a long time ago. I hope his family and friends find comfort and can fondly hold the memories he gave to all of us.

He was a man I didn't know very well but he was greatly respected by everyone and his presence was so inspiring. He was so warm and accessible but you knew you didn't want to dissapoint him.
Rest in peace Coach Lugo. You will be missed so much by so many.

On Tuesday October 28, we attended the mass for Rudy Lugo. It was the largest turnout we had ever seen. There was standing room only with monitors outside the church to handle the overload of mourners. For those who couldn't be there it was a very special service. The current Canoga football players lined both sides of the center aisle when the casket was brought to the altar. As a tribute to Rudy we sang the Canoga fight song and it seemed as if the whole church knew it. What a testimony to a man who touched thousands of people during his lifetime. Reading so many of the comments from those who knew him it's obvious Rudy was so respected and loved. We were in Rudy's first class back in 1970. He was our friend for over 38 years. He even became Joe's confirmation sponsor at Our Lady Of The Valley Church. As we left Canoga Park to return home it seemed to me that there is a little less sunshine on the earth because Rudy Lugo is no longer with us. We will always treasure our years at Canoga Park High and Rudy was a very important part of it. We never missed a football game those three years we were there and I remember Rudy up at the top of the bleachers with his headset on talking to the coaches on the field or being on the field with the players. He always had a smile and was truly a wonderful man.
We are grateful to have known him. His legacy will be at Canoga for many years to come when the football field is named after him. This is an honor he truly deserves and we'll be there to see it!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Coach Lugo, the toughest guy I knew. I was saddened when I heard that the greatest teacher, father, mentor and friend had passed away. Mr. Lugo was a great man and will be sadly missed.
I attended Canoga from 1984-1988 and talked with Mr. Lugo many times where he always offered guidance, advice, and prayer. At that time the I was your typical teenager who listen but didnt quite get the importance of the information given, but nonetheless I listen and took it with me.
After I graduated from school and started my career I saw Mr. Lugo and he was very happy for my career. He reached into his pocket and grabbed his wallet and pulled out a small prayer and gave it to me. He told me to keep it with me to keep me safe. Mr. Lugo, I wanted you to know that to this day I still have that prayer in my pocket with me always. Thank you for taking care of me then and I klnow you will always. I love you and miss you.

Both Rudy and his son Chris coached my son, Matthew Mendoza. Matthew is in such pain today after attending the funeral of the coach that he first heard speak of the Hunter football program. Coach Lugo got my son so excited about playing for Canoga Park High...and he is still excited about it. We have lost a wonderful man. I am sad for his children and sad for the future Hunter players that never got to play under him. We miss you, Coach Lugo. Thank you for the spirit you put in my son and for the talent you brought out. You and your son, Chris, will always be key people that helped shape Matthew's life.

Canoga Park High 1989-1993. Footbal and wrestling team. Coach Lugo was a rarity among men. He could carry his heart on his sleave, take a pounding, and still lift his head up with pride. He had a way of infecting you with this need to give it your best shot. He could get on your case if you didn't. I was one of many insecure young men who had the blessing to come across this man. I loved football, wrestling tried my soul. Coach Lugo knew which buttons to push when you wanted to quit, and having lost most of my wrestling matches, season after season, boy there was times I felt it was justifiable.
There's one wrestling match that sums up for me, why his spirit will live on. It was my junior year, and our wrestling team was up against El Camino Hight in a dual meet. I always felt confident hours before a match, but the butterflies almost always seem to get the best of me as I stepped out on to the mat. Right before me was a kid who had just the opposite persona. He was cocky, fluid in his walk, and sure of himself. The match was on and sure enough he was quick to make work on me. He'd take me down, secure some points, and let me go to do it over again. The butterflies were gone, since matches seem like forever when you are barely hanging on. For whatever reason, he felt he needed to rub it in. He picked me up head over heels and drop me directly on the top of my head (an illegal move in high school). I blacked out for a few seconds. I t felt as though my body became a limped vegetable. I came to, startled at what he did. The ref immediately stopped the match, awarded me points, enough to win, and asked if I wanted to continue. He explained that I decided to end the match I would win by default due to his actions. I was sitting at the edge of the mat and there was Coach Lugo with anger on his face. I was telling coach, hey I could take this win, no problem. I'll score this win for the team. I'll end it. But he saw the fear this kid instilled in me. That's what his anger was aimed at. It was no longer about winning or losing. There was a righteous anger that called out to fight for dignity. I told the ref I would continue. I went on to beat this kid from El Camino. It wasn't easy, but I gained something from that experience. Even know, when choices are tough, Coach Lugo's voice is not far. He'd want for me to do what's right and stand up for myself. Thank you.

What a wonderful memorial page for Couch Lugo. Back in 1972-73 after the dreaded proposition 13's passage, and LA School System's string of cut-backs ensued...Coach Fazio, and Coach Rudy as T.A. had to take us girls for a semester for P.E. We had the time of our lives having the Varsity Football Coaches as our P.E teaches for the year. We worked them over, and had them wrapped around our little fingers. I remember coach Lugo trying to teach us girls how to do "Pull-ups" the correct way, and dealing with the hormonal teary mood swings as a result of their coaching, and correcting. He did a wonderful job under the circumstances, and I was proud to say that that year I had Coach Rudy, and Coach Fazio for my teachers! What an honor to have known him. His personal dedication will effect the lives the CPHS grads who knew him forever.

Coach Lugo, you were the ear to all who were in need and a shoulder for those with sorrow and pain. You always knew when someone was in need and no matter how busy you were you would stop and ask if they were ok and needed to talk. I am grateful for all those talks about life we had. What you taught me then I still carry now and will teach my own children. You were not just a coach on the field but also a coach of life and we will all miss you. Canoga will never be the same!

i first met rudy about 45 years ago. he played baseball with my cousin dan stoligrosz, i used to go to the games & afterward hang out with the 'older guys'. things would come around full circle once again as when i played football @ canoga, we ended up meeting once more. years after i graduated & he became the head football coach, i would usually see him @ the games one or two times a year. he was always kind & truely interested in how you were doing. he loved his family, his sports & his hundreds of kids he taught to be better...his legacy will live on in the many lives he touched...a wonderful man...will be forever missed...

In 1964 my first year as the varsity coach at Canoga I was reviewing the list of Bee Football players with their coach. When we got to the name Lugo, I said I didn't expect much. He was not very big or fast. Coach Dick Gearing put me straight. " This kid plays bigger and faster than his size. He has a huge heart" How prohetic. Rudy always wanted to please and always gave 100% of himself. That attitude and enthusiasm carried over when he was caoching and teaching. I will always consider him my friend and will remember him with warm effection. Canoga has been blessed to have Ansel Breniman, The Giacapuzzi Family and Rudy Lugo.

I remember that when I was enrolled in Basic Team my freshman year at Canoga, i was dreading going, but soon it didnt seem so bad. Coach Lugo was my teacher and he made it so fun. I remember that he would come over the intercom of the locker room and sing Ricky Martin songs. We would all just look at each other so confused, like Livin la vida loca?? and then stop and laugh. I realized it wasnt going to be that bad of a day in PE!He was such a caring guy and has inspired and touched millions of lives. He will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Coach Lugo! Heres to that Vida Loca At Canoga Park High!

Rudy Lugo was a beautiful human being. He was loved by all. Canoga Park High School students were fortunate enough to have Rudy as a role model and inspiration. Everywhere Rudy went, he spread the good news. We need more Rudy Lugos in this world. My sympathy to his family.

I cannot think of Canoga Park High School, my second home since 1980, without thoughts of Rudy Lugo. My simple words cannot express the sorrow I feel in his loss. You, his two children, should take some consolation knowing that people – of all ages - admired and respected him while he was alive, and he knew that. His kind, considerate and gentle demeanor softened the passion and drive that he had. This passion for people, for honor and for honesty could never be doubted, though, and anyone who met him quickly learned that. Everyone who ever knew him was positively influenced in some way because of knowing him. The greatest honor we can bestow on Rudy is to follow the examples he set. That would be an everlasting tribute to him.

I remember Rudy when he used to help us out as kids w/ school work @ the Guadalupe Youth center & at OLV. His Mom worked @ the Rexall Owl Drug store in Canoga park. I had him as a P.E teacher and he was always there for us to keep us out of trouble. He was a good man & a great person/teacher/coach.We are all going to miss him.

I remember Mr Lugo as always wanting the best out of all of us. He was tough, caring, and fair. Just like a teacher, coach, and mentor should be. I still remember Mr Lugo giving me that piercing stare when he knew I was not doing as well as I should be, whether that be in class or on the wrestling mat. It always drove the point home that I should try harder and that was what he wanted for all of us, to be all you can be. I'll Miss you Mr Lugo.

You exemplified the true meaning of a man and a father. I have read many of the passages people wrote and have really enjoyed the memories and stories (I think the guys have better ones to tell, as they relate to the sports side of his legacy =). Coach Lugo you were so damn sincere and anyone who didn’t know you can read through all these passages and know I speak the truth. Your fire and passion for competition doesn’t come along very often, you were in a winner in every aspect.

Coach Lugo was a father-figure. It felt good to see him walk around campus proud of his students. We always knew how much he loved being with us. He was more than a teacher, he was a LIFE coach. One of my favorite memories, is when the students sold candy bars to send Coach Lugo and Nancy to Hawaii. This is how much he means to all of us. I feel so honored to have known him. My prayers are with his family. God Bless.

Melissa and Chris,
Your dad helped me through a very hard time, even while your mom was ill. He would give me prayer cards as a way of letting me know he was thinking of me. I am not Catholic, but cherished those prayers .He did not let a day go by when he did not ask how my family was. I cherished his kindness and consideration. He was one of the nicest gentlemen I have ever known. My thoughts and my heart is with you.

It is very difficult to say "so long" to my dear childhood friend. The Leveque and Lohnes families all grew up together and stayed in close contact with Rudy and Nancy.
A fond memory of Rudy was watching him do his homework in the vestibule of the church at Our Lady of the Valley. I am serious. He even brought his typewriter. He loved God and he loved being close to him no matter what he did. I find peace knowing he is no longer in pain. He is with Nancy, his family and God. They are all watching over Christopher and Melissa.
I know the real reason Rudy coached. It wasn't to win a wrestling match or a football game. It was to make better people...and he succeeded. Winning was just icing on the cake.
The world is a better place because, Rudy, you were in it. You are way to young to leave us. Our hearts go out to Christopher, Melissa, your Mom, Barbara and your entire family.
We will meet again, dear friend, until then, know that you made a big difference in this world. That is the greatest gift of all.

I don't think Coach Lugo truly knew how many hearts he touched, lives he changed, dreams he helped come true, faith he restored, life lessons he taught, love he encouraged, strength he gave, lives he inspired, and love he spread. This kind humble mans life is a lesson for all. If only more of us could live as he did, Imagine what a world we would create.

Mr. Lugo was such an incredible man and teacher. I cannot believe he is gone. An old colleague had a poster on his wall that said "A hundred years from now it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove ... but the world may be different because I made a difference in the life of a child." I said to him "that reminds me of a teacher I had in high school" referring of course, to our beloved Mr. Lugo. He gave me a ride home once and asked if I minded driving in the "lemon-sine". He truly made every student feel special, that they were important, that they mattered. My heart goes out to his children and family.

Dear Melissa and Chris, Your dad was so special. He is an inspiration to me every day that I teach. To be like him and to make a difference in a child's life; to bring God to work with me and to share His love everyday! Your dad gave me a rosary when he was my teacher at OLV, a little yellow one, and I still carry it with me. He helped me through some bad times with my own father's illness when I was at CP. We would talk long after church had ended and he told me how much he loved your mother long before she ever knew it. He is the reason that I let my son play football - because I trusted him. I new that he would teach him God's way first, not the win no matter what the cost attitude. I know that your parents are together again in Heaven and will be spending their anniversary at Disneyland -Heaven Resort. God bless you and keep you both.

Mr. Lugo touched so many lives especially mine while at Canoga (81-84) and at Our Lady of the Valley CCD.
I remember his smile and many times checking on me and saying in Spanish class "I know your parents" and thinking that he knew I didn't go to mass on Sunday. I would put my head down and think "please Mr Lugo not in class" and he would start on one of his lectures. Always ending with a smile to show that he cared. So caring and with the right words when I was going through a rough time. He saw you as a person not just student. As a daughter/son. He taught two generations in my family and we all have fond memories. He coached West Valley Eagles with my boyfriend and I know the loss if felt there too.
My condolences to the Lugo Family your loss is felt strongly by the community.

I was so looking forward to seeing you November 7th! I’ll be there, and I know you’ll be there, at your home, Canoga Park High School. Where you helped lost souls, fixed broken hearts, inspired greatness in school and athletics, provided a role model for those in need, expressed courageously, loved all with warmth and humor. You helped make me who I am and you are forever in my heart; my teacher, my coach, my best-man, my friend! Hunter Green will always be "Rudy" Green to me.

As a freshman in 1972 Mr.Lugo, as we knew him in Spanish class, didn't seem much older than we were at the time. He was always so upbeat and made the class a pleasure to be in. As a junior being on the jv baseball team, but never getting to play, Coach Lugo would have the words of encouragement that the other coach didn't have time for. After 33 plus years being gone from CPHS I can say that my fondest memories have Coach Lugo in them. He touched many lives and he will be missed, but never forgotten.

Chris & Melissa, When I think of your dad one word comes to mind "Inspirational". I so enjoyed listening to the way he spoke to his students, and know that he touched many of the young lives at Canoga. I was fortunate to have worked with Rudy for 20+ years and I feel the loss of a man with a profound gift for making everyone around him feel important and loved. His presence will continue as each one of us shares with another what he taught us about being the best person that we can be.

Rudy was my coach, my teacher, my mentor and my friend. I played football, wrestled and had his Spanish classes from 1984 - 1987. In life most of us are lucky if we even meet one person who leaves an imprint on our lives. This man was that person for many, many young men. He was tough, he required toughness of us, not just on the field or the mat but mentally and in our lives. Rudy held us accountable to each other and ourselves, while being compasionate and understanding. For me, he was a guide for what life would offer and he made judgement and hard decisions less complicated. At many times in our lives we have opportunities and crossroads (right & wrong) he helped formulate our foundations for making these difficult decisions. Coach you led by example, you made men out of boys with a stiff kick in the butt and a compassionate strong arm around our necks. You will always be with me. Rest in Peace "Coach", feel no more pain and cruise the clouds with your lost love. Don't go far, I may need a stiff kick in the future..forever your student, your athlete and your friend. Love ya Coach..

I was a senior and Rudy was a junior in the fall of 1963 at Canoga Park HS. We played together on the football team. I remember Rudy as a handsome young man who was intelligent, athletic, and very personable. Always positive with never a bad word to say. Everything I read about him was also true of him when he was a young student at Canoga. Every time we crossed paths on campus I always felt good just having talked to him. His sincerity was contagious. Eleven years after I graduated from Canoga my youngest sister was in his Spanish class. She told me he would always ask how I was, what I was doing and to say hello. Rudy always remembered everybody with warmth and compassion. Whenever Canoga Park football came up I was always proud to say that I played with their coach. He was a great man and will be missed.

As fellow true Hunters, Canoga Park has truly lost a hero. Coach Lugo helped guide the students of Canoga Park High School to become something, to never quit and always FIGHT ON! Each of us have our own personal memory and those memories will go on with us forever. Canoga Park High School and the city of Canoga Park will never be the same, but we will do what he would have wanted us to do and that is FIGHT ON, as true HUNTERS would. Therefore, after our win last night, we have FOUGHT ON and will continue to.
It was only just recently that I myself found out that, Coach Lugo and my Father, Thom grew up together. My grandmother would always talk of a Linda and Alex and I never really knew who they were until I had brought up Coaches diagnosis of cancer, she then told me many stories of Coach and my Father, playing together in the neighborhood and going to school together, (Canoga Park Elem., Sutter Middle School and Canoga Park HS). My father moved on and did his thing and Coach Lugo became an Icon here in Canoga Park.
Melissa, Chris, Mrs. Lugo, and Irma our thoughts and prayers are with you. He is looking down on you and will guide you throughout all of your endeavors for years to come. God Bless!

As Head Coach at Sun Valley Poly in 2001 and 2002, I was lucky enough to coach against Rudy's teams. Rudy Lugo was about kids, and he cared that they were taught correctly. He was a role model for all men who are lucky enough to be in this profession.

Coach Lugo's influence extended well beyond the Boy's PE department. Our daughter Robyn, a 2006 CPHS graduate from the Agricultural and Veterinary Science Magnet, was also a cheerleader during her tenure there and was profoundly and positively impacted by Coach Lugo. His work ethic, his love of the kids and the profession he chose were so obvious that you could not help but love and respect this gentleman.
His cancer diagnosis struck our daughter terribly because it followed closely on the heels of my father's (Robyn's grandfather's) 2005 death from lung cancer. The challenges associated with cancer treatment impact everyone surrounding the patient in different ways. It can change you to the very core of your being.
Clearly it has with our daughter and from a review of this Guest Book, with countless others in and outside of the CPHS family. Dr. Thompson, CPHS's equally revered and recently retired principal, said it correctly. Living our lives as did Coach Lugo is the greatest tribute. A lofty goal indeed.
Mr. Canoga will be revered for generations and will be sorely missed.

Wow.... what a shock seeing today's Daily News after being out of California for 5 months. Although I never had Mr. Lugo as a teacher when I was at Canoga High, two distinct thoughts are forever etched in my mind:
1. Anytime I saw him in the halls or his classroom he always had a smile and seemed to be a genuinely happy man.
2. I know from friends and others that were in his classes that he was very well regarded... the kind of teacher that made a solid connection with students (something that is special and very rare)

Rudy Lugo was an amazing man. I always admired his passion and love for the community. He had respect for everyone no matter where they came from. Coach Lugo always had the right words to say and his life lessons have touched the lives of so many people.
I had the pleasure of playing football for Coach Lugo for 4 years. I've never met a human being that worshiped and loved the game of football as much as he did. Especially for Canoga Park High School, he bled hunter green. He always kept me inline and never hesitated to lend out a helping hand. I've been blessed to have had such an inspiring person in my life. God bless the Lugo family. Your suffering is finally over, rest in peace Coach.

I met Coach Lugo 25 years ago during my freshman year of high school at CPHS. It took one week to know that he would be my favorite teacher for the rest of my high school years. Little did I know that he continued to be and will always be the greatest mentor anyone can have. I was so blessed to have respected him as my teacher and years after admired him as a colleague for ten years. Yet, the best gift was to have loved him and appreciated him as a friend. He gave so much unconditional love through his example and encouragement. He taught me so much about the power of prayer and our connection with God. I know that he is with God and I also he will continue to light the way for his family. Melissa and Chris you were his pride and joy(always remember that). May God give you strength and peace. My love and prayers for our beloved coach and for his family. We will never forget you!

Coach Lugo, the name said it all. My best coach ever. I was blessed to wrestle and play football for him. I still remember the first day he noticed me my freshman year walking the locker room after football practice. He grabbed me and said you are gonna wrestle for me after football season. I just laughed and said no he said, we'll see. Everything from there on was history. The good times and great memories, I will never forget. He was the reason for my success in sports. He was always there like a father before school, after school,Saturdays, during wrestling tournaments, the good old days. If I wasn't doing good in class he made sure I would bring my grades up and told my teachers to let him know if I acted up. He is the reason why I was able to play sports. He was the one person who was there for me at all times, good and bad. I will never forget him and what I accomplished in wrestling with him by my side as my coach and friend. I still remember the last time I saw him and my last hand shake and hug I will never forget that moment. Love you Coach.
Melissa and Chris you were very lucky to have this man we called coach as your father God Bless you guys, I'm sure he is very happy to be with your mom.

For thirteen years I was part of a church community where Rudy worked in youth ministries and served in many other capacities. He helped many families prepare for the baptisms of their children, along with my wife. Being guests in his home during Renew Meetings was a privilege. If the true measure of a man is his love for fellow men and women, then Rudy was as pure, in this repect, as any man I have ever met. My heart goes out to his family. May God hold him close for eternity.

In January 1996 I walked into the small gym at CPHS upset that i had just transfered into a new school half way through my 9th grade year and i HATED p.e.. i unwillingly walked up to coach lugo with my little check in slip and checked into a class that would change me as a human being forever..... I refused to dress for class , everyday Coach Lugo would pull me aside and try to talk some sense into me ... i was a stubborn 14 year old, and one day he told me " you know Chrystal, if you refuse to dress you will fail." He put his hand on my shoulder and his other hand on his hip ( while holding the infamous clip board) and said " you might refuse to dress for my class but i refuse to fail one of my kids" and he stuck the clip board in my hands and made me his T.A. for my second period P.E. class. Which didn't really end up as glamourous as it sounds, but he made it seem fun... I spent the rest of the year taking role, cleaning his office , folding jerseys for "HIS BOYS" and wiping down helmets... I had some ruff times throughout my time at Canoga Park High School and Coach Lugo was always there with good advice, ..... like a dad. After I had my son, in 1997, i came to visit the Coaches, and coach Lugo gave my son a football and a white practice jersey (#77) he held the huge jersey up to my tiny baby and said "perfect fit little guy, you better come play for me." It's kind of ironic that Coach gave me jersey #77 and my little sister's boyfriend throughout highschool at Canoga (now fiance) played for him his senior year 2003 or 2004... and guess what his number was, #77. I have found myself talking about coach Lugo, how he was my favorite teacher and so helpful, telling random people this story at least once a month for the last 11 years. Coach Lugo touched so many lives and he seemed to remember all of his kids, So how could we ever forget him. As often as he would tell me nothing is impossible-Its IMPOSSIBLE to forget him and everything he taught me. Coach Lugo's Legend will live on in the hearts of all of us who were blessed with the opportunity to get to know him , and especially through his son and daughter. He will be truly missed and my heart goes out to Melissa and Chris. God Bless......
