David Mathison Obituary

David "Dave" August Mathison passed away peacefully with his family and loving partner at his side on Sunday, January 21, 2024 at the age of 84. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he graduated from Rufus King High School and the University of Wisconsin at Madison, earning his Bachelor of Science, Phi Beta Kappa in 1960 and Doctor of Medicine with Honors, Alpha Omega Alpha in 1963. He completed his medical internship at the University of Rochester 1963-64 and served, with commendation, as Captain in the United States Army in Vietnam 1965-66 . Upon his honorable discharge, he returned to Rochester to complete his medical residency. In July of 1970, he was offered a position at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and relocated with his wife, Gail, and young family to La Jolla, California. As Board Certified Physician in both Internal Medicine and Allergy & Immunology, David helped to set up the Allergy and Immunology Division at Scripps, and served for 45 years as beloved, respected, and renowned physician, both practitioner and researcher, specializing in Allergy and Asthma. Certificated in Tropical Medicine & Travelers Health, he also worked to establish and run the Travel Clinic at Scripps, building on a lifelong interest and love for travel, inspired by his early days as a medical fellow in southern Madagascar, 1962-3, at what became the Ejeda Hospital near Fort Dauphin, and continuing with world travel throughout his life. Some of his many professional achievements and accolades include: Scripps Clinic Medical Group, Senior Consultant, Division of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology 1985-2016, Head of the Division of Allergy and Immunology, as well as Director of Residency Program 1977-85, and Executive Officer of the Department of Medicine 1975-80; President of Medical Staff of Scripps Green Hospital 1978-79; Best Doctors in America, 1992-2016; Adjunct Professor, Scripps Research Institute Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine 1991-2006; Associate Professor, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Diego 1974-98; Member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Allergy & Clinical Immunology 1985-90; San Diego Allergy Society President, 1977. Furthermore, he authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in medical journals as well as contributions to medical textbooks. He was ever grateful to all his colleagues at Scripps Clinic with special thanks to his esteemed partners and good friends, Dr. Donald Stevenson, Dr. Ronald Simon, and Chris Allen, Administrative Assistant. In addition to extensive world travel, Dave enjoyed time with his family, living by the beach, and avidly cheering for the Green Bay Packers. He is preceded in death by father Alfon Dahl, mother Alice Evelyn, sister Ellen Mathison, brother-in-law Dr. Roland C. Brown, and nephew Steven Brown. He is survived by loving family members: sisters Karen Brown and Kristine Mathison; children James, Timothy (and wife Ruth), Lynne, and Cynthia; grandchildren Max, Zach, Emma, Daniel, John, Amara and Teo; nephews and nieces Michael, Maria, and David Brown, Alyson Zurek, Chris, Jeff and Kevin Leidel; grandnephew and grandnieces Ryan, Cassie, Palmira and Paula; as well as wonderful life partner of the past 12 years and great love, Susan Sibert Foerster, her family, and the close friends they shared. A Celebration of Life ceremony will be held in San Diego on March 9, 2024. In lieu of flowers, a tribute donation to The Scripps Health Foundation is appreciated. donate.scripps.org/InMemoryDavidMathison
