Christa Cheek Obituary

Christa (Miller) Cheek

SUGAR GROVE: Christa (Miller) Cheek of Sugar Grove, Ohio and Frankfurt a/M Germany, left us softly on Monday morning, February 21, 2011 at the age of 70.

Beloved wife of Paul W. Cheek, Jr. and beautiful mother of Natascha Miller, she is preceded in death by her dear son, Frank M. Miller (1994).

She is survived by her three step children, Randy and Tammy Cheek of New Albany, Todd Cheek of Columbus; and her granddaughter, Rachel Cheek; her brother, Heinz Kempf; and her cousin, Klaus Hänsch.

Christa studied tailoring and fashion design in Germany before immigrating to the States in the early 70's. She was employed for over 18 years at the Eastland Lazarus Department Store, where she was known for her hearty sense of humor, her pretty long nails and red hair, and her genuinely warm service to her customers. Christa loved nature, especially her hummingbirds. She eagerly awaited them each spring. Her big heart always provided refuge for strays and wildlife. She will be missed by so many who knew and loved her.

Christa and family extend a sincere thank you to Fairhope Hospice & Palliative Care for their compassionate assistance in those last weeks.

The family asks to be supported in this time of deepest mourning with a visit from friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 24 at the FRANK E. SMITH FUNERAL HOME in Lancaster, Ohio. A service will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Brian Dillahaunt. Burial will follow at Stukey Cemetary on Old Logan Road near Sugar Grove.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Fairfield Area Humane Society, 1721 Granville Pike, PO Box 1109, Lancaster, OH 43130.

Dear Miller and Cheek Families,
I am writing on behalf of Teddy, who Christa rescued from an intolerable home situation and, in turn, placed into my care. Teddy only knew of her as a deeply caring friend who loved animals with a passion, especially the little ones. That he is today a joyful, beloved member of my family is testament to Christa's efforts to right what she saw as a deep injustice. We were blessed by her compassion and warm encouragement. Christa was such a special person, one who truly lived her deeply-held beliefs. May she rest in the Hand of God, forever a protector of "the little ones."
