Alfredo Gallegos Obituary

Alfredo "Chemo: Gallegos passed away on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Placida Gallegos; brothers, Rudolfo Gallegos and Pete Gallegos; paternal grandparents, Nieves and Isabel Gallegos; maternal grandmother, Filomena Sanchez, mother-in-law Guadalupe Cordova Alarid and father, Nieves Gallegos Jr.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rose Alarid Gallegos; sons, Alfredo Alan Gallegos (Hope Montoya Gallegos), Aaron Gallegos and fiancé Tracy Garcia; daughter, Alicia Gallegos; grandchildren, Crista Gallegos, Krystal Gallegos, and Ashley C de Baca; grandson, Marcos Gallegos; sisters, Dolores G. Martinez, Gia Berged (Frank), Isabel López (Antonio); brother, Eddie Gallegos (Evelyn); half-brothers, Nieves Gallegos (Vern) and Andres Gallegos of Buena Vista; half-sister, Beatriz Richards; special cousin, Judy Lyons; father-in-law, Ricardo Alarid; sisters-in-law, Anna Gonzales (Macario), Sylvia Garcia (Manuel) and Richard Alarid (Elayne) of Omaha, Neb; nephews and nieces, Henrietta Griego, Tony, Andy, Paul Adam and Patricia Gallegos, Edwardo, Tara, Brandon, Keri Lyn Gallegos, Aaron Pargas, Frankie, Roland, Brianna Berged, Franchesca Jenkins, Antoinette and Salomon López, Melinda, Anita and Diego Gonzales, Melissa Davis, Felicia Garcia, Kiana Alarid; special nephew, JC Martinez.

He was a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School where he participated in basketball, baseball and track. One year after graduation he joined the United States Army. In 1969, he enrolled at New Mexico Highlands University where he earned a B.A. degree in social work and a M.A. degree in guidance and counseling.

Upon graduation he was employed as an educational adviser with the New Mexico Educational Talent Search Program. He was later employed with the Upward Bound Program at Highlands University as program director for 26 years where he helped hundreds of Northern New Mexico high school students complete high school and gain admission into post secondary institutions.
He became very active in the community. He was a member of the Paul D. Henry PTA, the West Las Vegas Head Start Program, the West Vegas Bilingual program, was Board Chairmen of the Greater Las Vegas Council on Alcoholism and Board Chairman of the La Salida Drug Abuse Program.

While employed at Highlands University, he was a member of the New Mexico/West Texas Student Assistance Association where he served as association President on several different occasions; he served as President of the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Program Association and President of the National Council of Educational Opportunity Associations.

He was the founder of the Los Cien de Highlands, a group of Highlands graduates and friends of the university whose only goal was to raise money to help qualified students enroll at Highlands University. After his retirement, he became an ombudsman advocating for the rights of the elderly, he was a member of the Immaculate Conception Bereavement Ministry, he was a volunteer at the Cocina de San Pascual soup kitchen and a volunteer with the ECHO food program in Mora.

His last request was that he be forgiven by anybody he may have hurt as he forgave anybody who may have hurt him.

Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Saturday as follows: Rosary will be recited at 9 a.m., followed by the Mass of Resurrection at 10 a.m., celebrated by Rev. George Salazar. Interment will follow the mass at Mount Calvary Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be: Marvin Perea, Jona Quintana, Arturo Vargas, Albert Rodriguez, Cristino Griego, Manuel Sandoval and Jimmy Angel. Honorary pallbearers are: Orlando Quintana, Manny Pacheco, Horacio Trujillo, John Olguin, Louie Martinez, Carlos Chavez and Patricio Paiz.
