Elizabeth G. "Mammaw" Reese

1923 - 2017

It is nearly impossible to describe one's life, particularly if they have lived a full, good and in many ways extraordinary life. Ruth Elizabeth Reese, "Mammaw" to her grands and great grands lived this kind of life.

Elizabeth was born on June 6, 1923, to John Floyd and Sarah Garrett. On Nov. 2, 1941, she married her lifelong sweetheart, Jim Muriel Reese, aka "Papaw," in Fort Worth, Texas, and they raised their eight children. She loved Papaw and was from a generation that understood commitment regardless of the ups and downs. They had many ventures together in real estate and ranching, relocating from Azle, Texas, to Golondrinas in the late 1970s. Never afraid to try new things, she was an entrepreneur in her own right as a store owner and dealer in antiques. Her children and family always mattered most. Her family is large in size but she knew and loved each one individually. Elizabeth enjoyed a cup of coffee, good conversation and never tired of asking questions or giving her opinions.

She loved to be on the go and made friends wherever she was. Ever the gracious host, she always welcomed family, friends and strangers into her home with a piece of homemade pie or cake. She lived and loved well.

Elizabeth parted this life on Aug. 24, 2017, at her home in Golondrinas, surrounded by those she loved.

She is preceded in death by her two brothers, parents, husband, Muriel and two sons, Jim Reese and Jeff Reese.

She is survived by her children, daughter, Jeri Wilhite and husband, Kenneth, of Aledo, Texas; son, Anson Reese, of Fort Worth, Texas; daughter, Laurie Crow and husband, Mike, of Azle, Texas; daughter, Sarah Horner of Azle, Texas; son, Joel Reese and wife, Judy, of Weatherford, Texas; and daughter, Lisa Griego and husband, Lucas, of Golondrinas; 19 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, and a great-great-granddaughter.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Rogers Chapel in Las Vegas. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Rogers Chapel. Interment will follow at the Reese Family Cemetery in Golondrinas. Serving as casket bearers will be: Lucas Griego Jr., Michael Griego, Steven Reese, Joshua Horner, Chad Reese, Reese Wilhite, Ford Wilhite and Micah Horner.
