In 1961, Abe was studying for the bar exam in a home next door to mine in Laurel Canyon on Stanley Hills Drive. I was a young folksinger who had just been offered a songwriting contract from Henry Mancini. I showed the contract to Abe who re-wrote much of it. When I offered the re-written contract to Henry, he laughed and said (paraphrased here): "you mean some law student who is fresh from law school has rewritten the standard songwriter publishing contract?" Then he said: "you know, he's not too shabby. The changes make lots of sense. I may keep some of them." That was the beginning of Abe's music career. I introduced him to all my music friends - John Phillips (Mamas and Pappas, Hoyt Axton, etc. Abe helped me all through my music career. . . I'm so sorry I didn't get a chance to see him and say goodbye. My deepest sympathy to his family. I will always remember him.
