Alan Morton Obituary

Morton, Alan
May 7, 1925 - April 1, 2011
Fullerton- Alan Morton passed away April 1, 2011 at the Sunnycrest Chalet assisted living home in Fullerton. He was born May 7, 1925 in Wilmington Delaware to John Morton and Jeanie Muir.
As a young child Alan lived in Scotland with his Aunt Margaret. During WWII he served in the 457th Bomb Group as a turret gunner in a B-17, flying missions in Germany. After the war, he attended Ohio State University where he met and married Barbara Nix. They moved to Fullerton California in 1961 and he began a career as an executive in the aerospace industry at North American Rockwell in Downey. There he worked as an illustrator and technical writer for the training manuals for astronauts in the Apollo space projects. On Jan. 27, 1967, astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died in a fire in the command module while preparing for the first crewed Apollo flight. After the tragedy Alan left aerospace and started a career in real estate as a successful commercial broker in Fullerton. For many years he devoted his time as a gadfly at the Fullerton City Council meetings and was responsible for persuading the council to air its meetings on cable TV as well as prompting local government to name three Fullerton city parks after the Apollo astronauts killed in the simulated launch- Grissom, White and Chaffee Parks. Alan also invented and patented such items as the Breathe Ease Nursery Vapor Tent, Night Stick and the Kitten Gym. Alan is survived by his ex-wife Barbara Scown, daughter Lana Meadows, son Scott Morton, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the kind and caring staff at Sunnycrest Chalet. Graveside services and burial for Mr. Morton will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, April 16th, at the Loma Vista Cemetery, 701 E. Bastanchury Rd., Fullerton, CA 92835. A private reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation be made to a charity of one's choice.

Alan was one of the more active petition circulators during the Fullerton Recall. He was the first one to spot, during 1994, that the City was trying to implement a water rate increase to serve as a backup general tax, when the Utility Tax would eventually fail. I spent countless hours with him at his office on Harbor Blvd. He was the wonderful stuff from which our Republic is made.

I worked for Alan Morton, briefly, before my marriage, at North American Aviation, in 1961-62. We were both fresh from the mid-west - Al from Ohio and I from Madison, Wi. He was a hoot and fun to work for, during such a glamorous, patriot time in America - Kennedy, the Space program, etc. I never forgot Alan Morton and have great memories of that era.
