Albert Abajian Obituary

September 7, 1926 - December 11, 2016 Albert J. Abajian, 90, passed away Sunday, December 11, 2016 surrounded by family. Albert was born September 7, 1926 to George and Mary Abajian in Los Angeles, California, the youngest son of 5 children. He graduated from Montebello High School in 1944. Albert served in the U.S. Army as a radio operator from 1944-1945. He was honorably discharged to join his family following his brother Louie's death during WWII. Albert attended East L.A. Jr. College, where he began his college football career. He received his master's degree from the University of Southern California in 1953. As a member of the 1952 Trojan football team, he played in the 39th Rose Bowl game, in January 1953, defeating the Wisconsin Badgers. After graduation, Albert played rugby on the American Allstar Rugby Touring Team's First Australian and New Zealand tour in 1953. Albert then began his long career in education, retiring as a high school principal. Since retiring he remained active with the USC Football Alumni, golf, travel, volunteering, and continued his fitness workouts throughout his life. Albert loved spending time with his family and friends, and working out at the gym with his buddies. Albert is referred to as one of the Classic Bodybuilders of the Golden Era. Albert is survived by his son, Bill (Terri) Shubin and daughters, Cynthia (Jim) Keawe, Toni Davidson and Vici (Rob) Morgan; grandchildren, Joseph, Alex, Alexis, Kamil, Grant, Jimmy, Herron, Makenna, Lainey, and Chase; and nephew, Jerry Abajian. Albert was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Arthur and Louie; and sisters, Victoria and Rose. Albert's cremains will be placed with his family at Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, during a private family burial on Friday, January 27,, 2017. A celebration of Albert's life will be held at the Huntington Beach Senior Center at Central Park on January 28, 2017, at 12:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Immanuel Armenian Congregational Church of Downey.
