Alexandra Jaffe Obituary

January 11, 1960 - November 20, 2018
Misty passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends at her home in Lakewood, CA, on November 20, 2018. The daughter of Adrian Jaffe and Nancy Cummings Jaffe was born in Lansing, MI, on January 11, 1960.
Misty and her family moved to California in 2001 to teach at CSULB. It was with the same devoted passion she applied to her work that she raised Olivia and Eleanor, installing the same moral compass within them that she demonstrated throughout her life, always taking the higher path for social justice. Misty joined the CSULB faculty as a tenured, associate professor in the Department of Linguistics. In 2005, she was promoted to professor, and in 2008 she received a joint appointment in Linguistics and Anthropology. Misty was chair of the Department of Linguistics, served as the CLA Faculty Council Chair for six years, and was a longtime member of the Academic Senate (serving on its Executive Committee). Misty was also a gifted teacher, mentor and a highly-published scholar. She served as the editor of Linguistics and Education as well as the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology. Misty's approach to research was validated by the awards she received: a Guggenheim Fellowship, an NSF research grant, a Spencer Foundation grant and a Wenner-Gren Foundation grant. Misty has made enormous and lasting contributions to the lives of her students and colleagues at CSULB and to research in her field internationally.
A memorial service is planned in January 2019 at CSULB. Details will be announced later.
Misty is survived by her spouse Jeff Pachuilo, daughters Olivia Jaffe-Pachuilo and Eleanor Jaffe-Pachuilo, brother Chris Jaffe and his family, and stepmother Jo Ann Jaffe.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Misty Jaffe Memorial Scholarship Fund. To donate online, go to https://giveto.csulb.edu/CLALIN08.

Misty, It has been nearly a year now, and how I have missed you. I wanted to let you know some of the highlights in our lives that we had anticipated have come to pass knowing that you would have been full of pride and joy.
Of course, Eleanor graduated in June. She amazingly found the strength in your absence to actually get all A's in her final semester. Summer on Corsica without you, still hurts, but I filled the house with relatives and friends who also felt your absence. I let Eleanor drive the Kangoo on Corsica (Yikes!) - she accomplished driving a stick shift. Eleanor started college studies this September at, can you believe, UCLA!
Our gentle Olivia found meaningful work with a nonprofit with good pay and some benefits. She continues in your fight for social justice supporting good causes. As we anticipated at some point in the near future, while they were vacationing on Corsica this summer Joey proposed! So now Olivia is fortunately fretting over planning her wedding. I'll keep you present in the planning.
One last important item, you are missed by all your friends and colleagues at CSULB. The faculty and staff thought it appropriate to establish a memorial fund in your honor to provide some financial support to worthy students in need. Can you believe that! What a great way to honor you and the contributions you made to CSULB. I know you don't like this part, but
Donations are still needed to fully fund the endowed student award. This can be done at the CSULB website https://giveto.csulb.edu under College of Liberal Arts, Linguistics Department, Alexandra Jaffe Memorial Fund in Linguistics
