Barbara Davis Obituary

October 19, 1919 - July 5, 2014 Barbara "Barby" Davis recently passed away quietly and peacefully in Santa Barbara, California. Barbara was born in Los Angeles as the only child of Edward Allen Spencer, Jr. and Jean Paul Armstrong Spencer. At the age of twelve Barby's family moved to Bakersfield where Barby later graduated from Kern County Union High School. Shortly after earning her nursing degree (RN) from Knapp College of Nursing at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara she married her late husband Fremont Emerson Davis, Jr. M.D. Barbara and her husband resided in La Canada for over 50 years where they raised their three daughters and where she enthusiastically volunteered in the schools and other community organizations. Barby was also an active volunteer with the American Red Cross and held numerous executive positions with USC Medical Faculty Wives, USC Town and Gown and La Canada Thursday Club. She was a founding member of St. George's Episcopal Church in La Canada. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years. With loving memories she leaves behind her daughters Katherine Suzanne Schomer (Joe), Mary Elizabeth Spencer-Davis and Ann Margaret Escue (Ron), and her grandchildren Robert James (Brenda), Spencer Schomer (Kristina), Elizabeth Escue, Philip Escue, and Charles Spencer-Davis. A celebration of Barby's life will be held at The Samarkand in Santa Barbara on Saturday, October 4th at 3:00 PM in the Chapel. A reception in her honor will follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to any of the above noted organizations in her name, including Visiting Nurses and Hospice Care, Santa Barbara, or to a charity of your choice. A gracious thank you to all her Samarkand pals who made her life joyful until the end and the compassionate hospice team who gave her comfort. Barby will be greatly missed by all those whose lives she touched along her 94 year journey. Arrangements entrusted to Welch Ryce Haider in Santa Barbara.
