Barry Silverman Obituary

Silverman, Barry Leon Barry Leon Silverman passed away on October 1, 2003 after an amazingly courageous battle with long-term leukemia. Knowingly using high risk and experimental therapy, Barry fought his cancer the way he lived: by sheer tenacity and striving always for quality of life. He shared his commitment to dealing with his disease by teaching public education courses for the Santa Barbara Hospice. Barry moved to Santa Barbara with his second wife, Wendy, and daughter, Chloe, in 1989 to improve their quality of life and to be near his daughters Terri and Tracy from his first marriage to Jeanne Stuart. Barry was born on June 1, 1934 in Los Angeles. He grew up in L.A. loving fast cars and the beach. In his teenage years, he became a commercial fisherman living in Hawaii and the French Frigate Shoals. These years were some of his happiest memories. Though Barry became a very successful businessman, owning and operating Terry Hinge and Hardware in the Los Angeles area, his real joy came from his love of adventure. In fact, Barry had a passion for speed that he explained put him just on the edge - something which cleared his mind and helped him relax. Barry loved life - this love of life was apparent in everything he did. His passions over the last years of his life were time with his family, driving in vintage car races, being on his boats, skiing, fishing, and an overall enjoyment of the outdoors which he shared consistently and virtually always with his dog Henry (who was welcome in all of Barry's favorite Santa Barbara haunts). Barry is survived by his first wife Jeanne Stuart; his wife Wendy Varnals Silverman; his daughters Chloe Varnals Court, Terri King and Tracy Ilenstine; his sons-in-law Thadias King and Craig Ilenstine; his grandchildren Will King Zimmerman and Kate King and Skyler and Sanders Ilestine; his brother Steve Silverman; the team he assembled to help him fight for the last seven years; his many, many friends all over the world - and his constant companion, Henry. At Barry's specific request, there is no funeral. His friends and family will celebrate his life on Sunday, October 12, between 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at 813 Anacapa Street, Santa Barbara, CA. Any remembrances in his name may be sent to the Cancer Center of Santa Barbara. Bear, you will be sorely missed here - yet you are now free for more and greater adventures. We Love You.

Miss you always Dad

Carol Collier Cuthbert

April 13, 2024

I always think of Mr. Silverman when I am looking to take next steps in life.

My name is Carol Collier Cuthbert. I worked for Mr. Silverman starting in 1992. He hired me as a receptionist through a temp agency. He hired me permanently. I was in my early 20s and shortly after he called me upstairs to his office and gave me a promotion to sales. I was so shocked. He told me, don´t be surprised when people elevate you after working hard, expect it.

I was a young African American young lady with very little experience but with a strong work ethic. I learned so much at Terry Hinge and I met some very amazing people there. I will never forget him speaking those very powerful words or the kindness of his eyes.

Blessings to the family.
