Benjamin Cohen Obituary

May 2, 1935 - September 14, 2015 Benjamin L. Cohen, DO, who helped lead Pomona-based Western University of Health Sciences' growth into a nationally recognized institution, passed away peacefully at his home in Pasadena on September 14, 2015. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 2, 1935, the youngest child of Bessie and Abraham Cohen, and brother to Elaine and Lydia. His childhood dream was to become a physician. That dream was fulfilled in 1960, when he graduated from the Kansas City College of Osteopathy and Surgery. After several years in private practice in pediatrics, he went into medical education, including serving as Founding Dean of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine. He also was Provost and Senior Vice President of Health Affairs at the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth. Dr. Cohen became Western University of Health Sciences' Provost and Chief Executive Officer in 2005, and was the chief architect behind WesternU's 2007-11 expansion, as the university grew from five colleges to nine; added an Oregon medical campus; implemented a nationally recognized Interprofessional Education program; and increased enrollment from 2,300 to nearly 4,000. He served in several osteopathic leadership positions, notably as Chair of the Council of Deans of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). He received numerous honors, including Honorary Texan from the Texas House of Representatives, the Award for Outstanding Service from the New Jersey Society of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons, and the Dale Dodson Award from AACOM. He is survived by his loving wife, Regan; his daughter, Audrey; his son, Jon; six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Benjamin L, Cohen, DO Pediatric Scholarship fund at Western University of Health Sciences, 309 E. 2nd St., Pomona, CA 91766.

Truly missed, and never forgotten. I think of you often. Sometimes even through laughter, just by the thoughts of memories and moments shared while caring for you.

Dr. Ben Cohen - a friend, mentor, physician, father, and husband. His loving care and guidance to many has enriched all our lives. I am blessed to have had him as a friend, colleague and boss. May you rest in peace. God bless.

Dr. Cohen literally saved my life at 10 yrs old, when I collapsed with an anaphylactic reaction from my very first allergy shot. Years later I followed in his footsteps and became an osteopathic physician, I profession that I love. I owe a great deal to this man.

I have had the privileged of preparing the Cohen's Tax Returns and providing tax guidance for them for the past several years. Regan, my prayers and good wishes go out to you in the passing of "your" Ben.

A bright light which shined in our lives; a source of warmth, creativity and stimulation to
many and joyful enlightenment to others... has been extinguished!
With the passing of Dr. Ben Cohen , we have lost a unique gift, the friendship of
a man who generously shared his talents as scholar, healer, and prescient architect of facilities of learning. Ben promoted understanding and optimism as teacher, father, friend, husband, brother and colleague. He had extraordinary humor and communication skills and was perhaps the funniest guy in Medicine.
His pursuit of excellence resulted in unique growth of
learning centers and major achievements of their highest goals. Regrettably,
a true "one of a kind" is now gone.

Having never had the privilege of meeting Ben, only speaking to him on the phone many years ago, I can understand why he was cared for by so many.
May he rest in peace!

I was very fortunate to meet Dr. Ben and his lovely wife Regan 2.5 years ago. I lived a block away and would see Dr. Ben walking their dog and I would stop and talk with him every chance I could get. He will be greatly missed.

I had the privilege of working for Dr. Cohen for 3 years at Western University. I was fortunate enough to learn from this wonderful man. He taught me life lessons, and spoke to me about things that mattered. I have missed him everyday since he retired. He was a joy to work with, I looked forward to his daily greeting and smile, it is a blessing to have called him my friend.

Dr. Cohen was generous with praise, gentle with criticism, and had a kind word and good thought for everyone in need of either or both. I admired him a great deal.

Ben was a very smart, kind and caring. Even though I did not know him well at the time, he reached out and wanted to help out in an specific family situation. Ben's greatness as a person and friend is something that I always will remember.

I am endebted to his guidance

I first met Dr. Cohen in August, 2004 during an interview for CVM. I was immediately impressed with his kindness, his wit, and intellect. He was a quiet, but unstoppable force. I will miss him.
