Boyd Smith Obituary

April 6, 1958 - April 15, 2020 Boyd S. Smith of Pasadena passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 15, 2020 at the age of 62. Boyd's zest for life was unmatched and his circle of friends spanned the globe. A proud graduate of South Pasadena High School and the University of Southern California, Boyd worked at his family business from a young age, developing a strong work ethic and commitment to serving others. He had a successful career in both the commercial and residential real estate industries, carefully matching the needs of his clients with the perfect properties and investments. His career took him to New York, San Diego and Kauai, but he always returned to the city he loved, Pasadena. Most recently, he worked for the firm of Deasy Penner Podley. From an early age, Boyd pursued his passion to travel, collect art and antiques, and share his creative talents with others in special and unique ways. He is hailed as a Pasadena real estate architectural expert and has been quoted in the LA Times and Los Angeles Magazine. An active philanthropist, Boyd led fundraising events for the Huntington Library and Gamble House as well as many other charitable and social causes in his community. His humor and outgoing personality was matched only by his generosity and compassion. He was the first to reach out to friend in need with a call or hand-written note, as well as to help plan events to celebrate successes and life's milestones. Boyd was preceded in death by his parents, Mae and Stanley Smith, and is survived by his brother Todd Smith and sister-in-law Cathy Black-Smith. The family asks that contributions in Boyd's memory be made to Pasadena Huntington Hospital, Huntington Library or the Gamble House.A celebration of life will be held at a later date when it is safe to do so.

It's so hard for me to even start to think about the love I had for My Boyd. Almost every day I would chat with him online or on the phone. We'd share frustrations, desires, likes and dislikes. He would often offer to just "hang out" and enjoy each other. He saved me in so many ways from the demons surrounding my life. He rescued me in so many ways with his thoughtfulness, his heart, his kindness and his love. I miss him every day and keep his photo on my dresser to see every day and remind me of one of the most amazing friends I ever had.

I cannot believe that it has been nearly a year since we lost our beloved Boyd. There is not a day that has past that I have not thought about him. I have constant reminders of him all around me that make me smile. The pain is still great, but the sound of his laughter rings loud. I try to think of his big crazy smile and all of the amazing fun days we had together. I hope you are keeping all of the other angels entertained. Forever miss you.

It's a year later and the grief is still with me. I am renovating a new apartment and sorely miss Boyd and all his fun, exuberant, on target suggestions for design, placement of all the things that I love in the life, and the laughs, the laughs. Amy Miller and Newin Briones, designers I met through Boyd, have helped me and as we work, we talk of him all the time. 62. Too darn young, too terribly young. We so wanted more of him. He was such a joy in my life.

Thirty-five years ago, I waltzed into a job that Boyd assumed was to be offered to him. He had worked diligently for the position and, despite his obvious disappointment, never expressed the slightest bit of animosity toward me or his other colleagues. On the contrary, Boyd enthusiastically welcomed and magnanimously introduced me into my new professional environment, sharing all of the relationships that he had developed and repeatedly lending assistance and advice to his new found competitor. This, I came to know, was classic, and classy, Boyd, gracefully adapting to setbacks while cultivating new relationships and opportunities. With me, and eventually my wife, Boyd cultivated a devoted friendship and a wealth of experiences principally based upon our initial interaction that I learned to be at the core of his character. He was, simply, like no other.
Boyd's ingratiating personality, penetrating energy and fierce realism led him along many paths, facing myriad challenges, but ultimately always returning to those of us whose acceptance and admiration he knew were among his most treasured and well earned assets.
The void that was Boyd will not be filled by others. Instead, it will be supplanted by mythic reminisces of what was, what was not, and what could always have been. May you rest in peace, Boyd Smith, among the gods of men.

The most twinkling of blue eyes, and magnetic smile, his heart was REAL AND PURE, filled with great intentions...and the first to help others. An Angel who tread where others dare not step, rest well and make sure you find us all a bijoux of a Star to shine upon in Heaven. Love you!
