Carlos Velarde Obituary

November 29, 1929 - September 6, 2018
Judge Carlos E. Velarde entered eternal life peacefully on September 6, 2018 surrounded by loving family members. He was 88 years old.
Carlos Velarde was born on 11/29/29 in Los Angeles to Jose and Ana Velarde, and oldest sister Lucy Logan, followed by sisters Betty Jennings and Helen Holguin. Carlos graduated from Belmont High School in 1949. He met the ""Love of his life,"" Alice Erickson-Velarde, in 1950 at a Clifton's Cafeteria Barn dance and married in 1952.
In October of 1952 he joined the United States Army, luckily assigned to the legal office at Ft. Bliss, Texas, during the Korean War. After serving in the US Army he received his B.A. degree from Cal State Los Angeles and graduated from USC Law School in 1959.
Carlos' professional career began with the opening of a law office in East Los Angeles with Robert Takasugi (deceased Federal Court Judge) for 10 years. He had a strong commitment to the people of Los Angeles and the Latin community, serving fairly and compassionately there and throughout his lifetime.
Carlos was appointed to the East LA Municipal Court in 1969 by the then Gov. Ronald Reagan and elevated 2½ years later by Gov. Ronald Reagan to the LA Superior Court. In 1989 he was contacted by the CA Supreme Court and appointed to the State Bar Court serving as a Hearing Judge, and later Supervising Judge where he served until 2000. After the State Bar he joined the LA Superior Court, sitting on Assignment in several courthouses, until his final retirement at the age of 85.
Carlos loved his family dearly, and was preceded by his bride of 66 wonderful years, Alice Velarde; 3 children Edward (Karen), Dina, and Lynn, as well as 7 grandchildren, Matthew (Ady), Nathan, Janie, Justin, Zakkary, Emily, and Gregory.
Carlos and Alice traveled the world over, attending several Olympics and World Championships with Track and Field News, but most recently, as age crept up cruising the world. Their patio wall tells the story of their travels with beautiful tiles they collected from all the countries visited.
""WHAT A RIDE – THANK YOU GOD!"" was Carlos' favorite saying. Carlos will be truly missed by family and friends, and mainly Alice who says, ""Carlos is not gone, just gone ahead… Until we meet again!""
""Celebration of life service"" will be held at La Cañada Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 14th at 11am, with reception immediately following at the church (La Cañada Presbyterian Church, 626 Foothill Blvd., La Cañada, CA 91011).
Donations in Carlos' name to the Salvation Army or Union Rescue Mission would be greatly appreciated in lieu of flowers.

Psalms 90:10 says that the days of our years are 70 years, And if because of special mightiness they are 80 years. May vthe memories of the wonderful times you shared together bring a smile and joy in your heart.

Although we only met Carlos (and Alice) 3 or 4 times, it has been obvious that Carlos was a wonderful family man and a honored judge. We know other judges that have high praise for Carlos. We are friends with his daughter, Dina and just to hear her speak so lovingly and warmly about both her parents, is tribute to his kindness and love.
Our deepest sympathy goes out to Alice and the entire family. You are all in our hearts and prayers. May all the happy time fill you are this time and peace to know there is no more pain. Paul & Marilyn (Mare) McAtee
