Carol Locke Obituary

May 27, 1924 - February 16, 2021 Carol Louise Locke was born on May 27, 1924 in Albany, Oregon, the seventh of nine children of Herbert A. and Hazel May Barrett. She spent her youth in Portland, Oregon, attending Commerce (later Cleveland) High School and Franklin High School where she was a member of Delta Beta Phi Sorority. While still in high school she met the love of her life, John Anthony Locke, whom she married at St, Stephen's Episcopal Church on August 4, 1941 at the age of 17. In Portland, the couple settled in a home built with John's own hands from 2x4s salvaged from the Vanport Flood of May 1948. The house was built on a dirt road in suburban Ardenwald where the couple raised their five children, Kathleen Eunice (Kate Williams), Michael John, David Alan, Daniel Willard and Nancy Ann. The family moved to Glendale, California in December 1957 when John accepted a position as assistant engineer for Van de Kamps Holland-Dutch Bakery. The couple were actively engaged in the life of Glendale Presbyterian Church where Carol taught Sunday School classes for 30+ years. They were also avid square dancers as members of the Sets in Step Square Dance Club. Carol also had a keen sense of civic responsibility; she was a 30-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a women's organization providing education opportunities for female students. She was also a poll worker all the years we were growing up in Glendale. She will be greatly missed by her aforementioned children, as well as six grandchildren, Jennifer Jane Pearson Lopez, Julie Pearson Addison and Patrick Pearson; Wallis, Eli and Tyler Locke and four great grandchildren, Gabriella and Enzo Lopez, Jude Pearson and Luke Addison, as well as her large extended family, neighbors, PEO sisters, GPC, Sunday School students and scores of friends. Interment will be at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California with arrangements forthcoming.
