David Price Obituary

August 10, 1932 - October 31, 2023 Golf resort and airport entrepreneur David G. Price passed away peacefully in his Brentwood home today. He was 91. Known for his stewardship of American Golf Corporation and American Airport Corporation for 40 years, Price operated restaurant Don the Beachcomber, built DC3 restaurant, and co-founded Oaks Christian School.

Born August 10, 1932, in Culver City, California, to Barbara Lillian Riedl and Illtyd Glyn Price, both immigrants from England and Wales. David's siblings, Joan Anawalt and John Price, predeceased him. At age 11, Mr. Price started working alongside his father at Helms Bakery, packaging almond cakes. David graduated from University of Southern California with a B.A. in Economics and served as president of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He played on the freshman basketball team at USC and was a member of the NROTC.

After graduating, he served three years as a Lieutenant in the US Navy, obtaining his wings in 1955 as a naval pilot. David spent two of those years in Pensacola, FL as a flight instructor, receiving The Secretary of the Navy's award for 1000 accident-free flying hours. He enrolled at UCLA School of Law and received his degree in 1960. A member of the law review, he was in the top 10% of his class. Upon graduation, "poor as a church mouse," David went to work for the law firm of O'Melveny and Myers where he specialized in entertainment law.

In 1961, Mr. Price went to work for Joseph Drown, where he became president of Garden Land Company, Don the Beachcomber Enterprises and Getty Resorts. It was from Mr. Drown that he bought his first golf course in 1971, memorialized the deal on a dollar bill, and started California Golf Corporation. By 1993, the golf course management company became American Golf Corporation, operating over 350 golf courses in the United States as well as England, and Australia. An active member of Young Presidents Organization and Chief Executives Organization, he owned and operated the DC-3 Restaurant and Commonwealth Limousines as well.

David's great love for aviation inspired him to establish Museum of Flying and Supermarine at the Santa Monica Airport, where he flew his special P-51 Mustang, Cottonmouth. Over the past four decades, the Museum has restored and preserved dozens of Donald Douglas Company and World War 2 aircraft. Accruing over 4800 flying hours, he participated in the Reno Air Races, winning the silver medal in the Unlimited Gold Division in 1996. In 1997, he set the unofficial world speed record for a single engine propeller aircraft of 535.765 mph in Dago Red, his P51 Mustang. He enjoyed flying many vintage aircraft, including Spitfires, a Messerschmitt, T-28's, a Skyraider, a Hurricane, a Bearcat and a Stearman.

A philanthropist and activist, Mr. Price served on the boards of Union Rescue Mission, Children's Home Society, Boy's Town, Life Without Limbs, and received the Jerry Buss Humanitarian Award in 1998. During the Reagan Administration, he served on the Secretary of the Navy's Advisory Board on Education and Training. As basketball co-commissioner for the 1984 Olympics, David recalled enthusiastically participating in a pick-up game one afternoon, alongside Magic Johnson and Kurt Rambus. Passionate about education, in 2000 he co-founded Oaks Christian School in Westlake Village, a non-profit private school serving students in 4th through 12th grade.

David's heart always remained at home. He married Dallas Peterman upon graduating USC with her. After law school, they resided in Santa Monica and raised 5 children: Sheri (Craig) Price, Terry (Kevin) Roberts, Christy (Jim) Stanich, Jamie (Brad) Price-Schlei, and David (Tracey) Price. He has 12 grandchildren, Jennifer (Justin) Taton, Michol Roberts, James Roberts, Bryan Price, Kane (Danielle) Roberts, Kyle (Tori) Stanich, Glenna (Mike) Castrillo, Catherine Price, David Price, Bennett Price, Audrey Price, and Lillian Price-Schlei. Along came 5 great-grandchildren, Ryder Roberts, Tyler Taton, Brooks Roberts, Chase Taton, and Daisy Roberts. In 1999, he married Helen McDonald and became a stepfather to her children, Heather McDonald Hultgren and Craig McDonald. Step-grandchildren include Benjamin Wunsch, Destinee Valadez, Olivia Logario, and Faith McDonald. Step-greatgrandchildren are Gracen Wunsch and Kenneth James Logario.

Favorite pastimes included playing basketball, paddle tennis, music, and reading. David held true to his faith and family, devoted to coaching his children's sports teams and attending their games, cheering on his grandchildren from the sidelines. Throughout his life, he encouraged timely decision-making, prudent risk-taking, and challenged every individual to always improve. A problem-solver, he remained committed to motivating others to reach their positive potential, never wavering in his standards of excellence. An eternal optimist, he demonstrated being "unbelievably fantastic" provides boundless enthusiasm for each and every day here on Earth~

A private service will be held for family and a celebration of life will follow in the new year.

I met David through WW2 aviation. I crewed on one of his airplanes. He was a outstanding first class person who treated my son and myself exceptionally well. When I lost my son, it hit him very hard. God bless all his family.

TODAY is really, really great day! Because Mr. David Price shows direction of defining a school for my son after long, long search, and far, far away distance.

Yes. I search long time for my son school for 2 month over 150hours, here and there, lost directions once in a while. For considering many factors, such as school rankings/ location to airport/weather.

The search is quite hardship journey, it is not problem of a lot time spent on, but about pressure from the anxiousness/worry of choice mixed together.

Yesterday search was again over 3 hours, and this morning resume, and found my laptop was NOT closed for overnight, and come cross to the website of OAK CHRITIAN SCHOOL, and honorably know and read many about a GREAT NAME, GREAN MAN--- MR. DAVID PRICE! Salute to you not only to your marvelous achievements in life and business, but more, your love to your kids, your philanthropy in educations!

Thank you for your direction and hint!
We now know to focus find school in South CA, no need wander others...

I was fortunate to be invited to meet David in LA in '96. I had just finished a tour of duty with the RAF Red Arrows and David was keen to chat. He graciously spent the afternoon hosting me and a buddy at DC3, where we had lunch and he gave us the full tour of the museum and flightline. David was passionate about aviation and clearly loved talking about flying. What a lovely man. So very modest about his achievements and humble with everyone he came into contact with. He offered to fly me in his P51 the following day, but coastal fog prevailed. The following evening he invited us to a presentation by one of the former Tusskagee Airmen, where this photo was taken. Safe skies David. You were truly one of the greats.

When David saw me working overtime, I think he thought I was someone who deserved his help. Maybe that is why he loaned me the money to go to law school and accepted my repayment with a big smile on his face. It was a pleasure knowing David and he certainly remained an important person in my life. May his memory be a blessing

David was a fine friend
Through Aviation whom we met at the San Diego Polo Club where I had flown antique airplanes in for an event.
He brought a Hawker Hurricane and Spitfire down to San Diego for the San Diego Air & Space museum's open house on Gillespie Field that I was organizing .
I traded Dallas a ride in the Goodyear Blimp that I won, for a ride in the Museums Hawker Sea Fury - she got her blimp ride and I am still waiting for the Sea Fury

Claudia and I adored David - he was a wonderful man with whom we also consulted on airports with.

Truly a great American - he will be missed but not forgotten - love and prayers to his family

Hardly a day has gone by that I have not thought about DGP. He was my leader and mentor for 15 important and influential years. DGP was responsible for creating thousands of jobs and dozens of excellent leaders. DGP had an eye for top talent and performers. He cultivated that talent to maximize its potential. DGP was a superb role model, teacher, and coach. We learned things not taught in business school. The leaders under his tutelage went on to pay forward the many DGP lessons and thereby created unparalleled economic and social enterprise value. We learned about giving back and not just giving to a charity but adopting them. DGP was the epitome of a business and social maverick and innovator. He was known to place big bets on the "young turks" and this paid off for those of us who participated. He left an indelible mark on me and my family. Words are poor things to express his impact. It is an understatement to say we all owe him a great debt of gratitude. "Thank you sir"

David was a one of a kind, go get `em, reach for the stars, `dream big´ kind of guy. Quite a loss to all. My prayers and condolences go out to all the Price family, but especially to Dallas, my friend.

It was with great sadness and loss that I learned this morning of David´s passing, and Esther and I wish to express our deepest condolences to Helen and the Price family.
I met David in our first-year law class at UCLA Law School in September of 1957. We became instant friends spending hours together studying and discussing the practice of law and our future.
It didn´t take long to become aware of David´s intelligence, intellect, and interest in diverse matters. We both became members of the Law Review, and working together and spending time with him was a delight. David was intent on completing the usual three-year law program early, and started practicing law at O'Melveny and Myers. I followed him six months after.
In 1967 David called me. By then he was working with Joe Drown in his various businesses, and had come across an interesting real estate deal in Texas. It just so happened at that time, I had moved into real estate myself, and together David and I completed the Texas deal working and traveling together, rekindling our friendship.
In the following years we did more real estate transactions together before David purchased his first golf course, and the rest is history.
David´s success in his many endeavors was no surprise to those of us who knew him. From day one he had decided to become a successful businessman, and his continuing successes came as no surprise to those of us who knew him.
From his earliest days, David had an interest in philanthropy. He was in charge of raising money to help build a new library on the UCLA campus, and I was privileged to work with him on that project.
David and I always stayed in touch, and as time went by, I viewed from afar his many wonderful charitable accomplishments including the building of the campus for Oaks Christian High School.
When I learned of David´s death, I began to reflect on his many successes, loving family, and wonderful life and what a tremendous privilege it was for me to have been allowed to share a small part of it.
Esther´s and my prayers go out to his family. David was one of a kind and the world is a poorer place without him.
