David Sacks Obituary

Sacks, David H.
December 14, 1927 - January 29, 2012
A Life Dedicated to the Theater David Sacks, the well known Los Angeles theatrical agent, passed away at his Hollywood home on January 29, 2012. He represented prominent television and film artists as well as stage performers and singers. Noteworthy for representing minorities and character actors, David championed their casting decades before the industry began to follow suit. For that, among other things, he was beloved by his clients. David's 7 decades involvement in theater gave him a keen perception of the business and the performer's job in it. David took theater with him throughout his life; as a 16 year old apprentice at the San Francisco Opera, serving in the army where he formed a theater group, at UCLA earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree, directing and producing with Sausalito Little Theater, French Gulch and ACT in San Francisco, and in Hollywood the Players Ring Theater, now the Coast Playhouse. Finally in Los Angeles working as an agent, he traveled tirelessly to support his clients. For David it was not a special effort, but necessary. That's why the artists he represented often said they felt "understood" by David. Born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 14, 1927 to Augusta Horwitz and William Sacks, David's life journey in theater took him throughout the world, but he came full circle during an interview with Lilyan Chauvin on her TV series Hollywood Structured, when he called opera "the ultimate expression of theater." From 1943 as a teenage apprentice in the Opera, to 2012 as a seasoned theatrical agent, David's life was an expression of "the theater." For that, and his dedication, kindness, humor, willingness to listen, love of family and friends and his performer family, he will be sorely missed. A celebration in memory of David Sacks will be held at the Santa Monica Women's Club 1210 Fourth Street, Santa Monica on Sunday, April 1st from 11 am - 1pm.

David was a wonderful agent. His dedication to his actors was immeasurable. No one could have ever had a better guy in their corner. David, I will miss your wonderful voice calling me about an audition and your encouraging words and with, whether I booked it or not. Our business has lost a Man of great integrity and dignity. We are all better for having had you in our lives. Peace, and rest well my friend. You will be in our hearts forever.

I know you are listening to beautiful Opera and cracking jokes and drinking bloody marys. Rest quietly now until the next moment.
