Edward Henry Boyd passed away 24 September 2025 in his home in Palm Springs, California due to complications of Parkinson's at the age of 84.
Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, he attended Pearl High School and then graduated from Tennessee State University with a BSEE degree. He was a proud member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity.
Shortly after, he moved to Los Angeles, California. He had an exceptional career as an Aerospace Engineer working on some of the most advanced satellite programs that the United States ever developed. These programs included history making efforts such as: The Venus Exploration Program, that designed and engineered probes that landed on the planet Venus, the Telsat Program, which produced satellites that provided worldwide telephone and TV service, the GOES Program that produced satellites which to this day provides satellite weather photos, the MILSTAR Program, that developed the satellites the United States military used for secure global communications, as well as the development of Direct TV for civilian customers. He retired from Hughes Aircraft in 1998.
Edward was an avid traveler, exploring many parts of every continent and most of the Caribbean Islands. He had a passion for golf which he began playing as a teen and continued throughout his life.
He is survived by his only child, Charisse Boyd, his life partner, Thomas Sullivan, his brother, John Wesley Boyd and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Gloria Yvonne Boyd-Turner and Sybil Patricia Boyd.
Edward was committed to giving back to the community of Nashville and set up a scholarship fund for budding engineers in the Nashville area. In lieu of gifts and flowers donations can be made to the Pearl High School Heritage Classes Foundation for the Edward Boyd Perpetual Scholarships for Engineering and Computer Science. Website:
