Edward Rubin Obituary

May 18, 1931 - September 21, 2013
Edward Rubin, MD, 82, passed away on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the hospital surrounded by his wife of 40 years, six children, and some of his 16 grandchildren. He had been in and out of the hospital battling cancer and various complications for over a year.

Born in Rochester, New York, on May 18, 1931, Edward was the son of Philip and Celia Rubin. Edward attended Syracuse University both as an undergraduate and medical student. While attending Syracuse University, Edward met and married his first wife, Barbara. Edward and Barbara had four sons and moved to Los Angeles after the first two of their sons were born. Barbara passed away in 1973. Luckily for Edward and his four sons, several months later he met Laurie Williams, the woman Edward would love and cherish for the remainder of his life. Laurie had two children of her own, a daughter and a son.

Edward and Laurie were married on November 25, 1973. They raised their six children together in Beverly Hills. Edward established and operated a very successful medical practice including numerous 24-hour urgent care walk-in clinics in the underserved communities of greater Los Angeles. Edward took tremendous pride in providing affordable healthcare to a population that otherwise did not have access to such care. Edward loved to play basketball, which he excelled at, and would join every game he could find. More often than not, these games involved his family. Edward was a huge Laker fan and rarely missed a game. He enjoyed reading history. Most of all, when he was not working, Edward loved to spend time with his wife, children and grandchildren. He even welcomed a great-grandson before he passed.

Edward is survived by his loving wife, Laurie, his sister Lenore Sussman, and his six children: Michael, Steven (Stephanie), Douglas (May), Mitchell (Bertha), M.J. and Charles (Judith), sixteen grandchildren: Josh (Michelle), Nicolette, Zachary, Ethan, Jennifer, Barbara, Lily, Gabriel, Natalie, Jacob, Shreeya, Sam, Yonatan, Riki, Avital and Eyal, and great-grandson: Landon. Edward was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He had a gentle manner and was always there for his wife, children and grandchildren. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Edward's memory to: Surgical Oncology Educational Foundation, c/o Dr. Allan W. Silberman, Cedars Sinai Medical Center, 8700 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048.
