Francis Eugene YATES M.D. obituary

Francis YATES Obituary

Dr. Yates died at home on January 20, 2015. He was 87. Gene Yates received his medical degree from Stanford University in 1951. He served four years as a medical officer in the US Navy. Yates had a long and illustrious career in medical research. He brought tools of mathematics, physics, and engineering into the biological sciences, particularly the fields of endocrinology and aging. He held academic positions at Harvard, Stanford, USC, and UCLA where he held professorships in medical engineering, chemical engineering, and medicine. He was also a principal scientist at the pharmaceutical company ALZA Corp, and also at NASA. He was a mentor to many young scientists. He loved to ski, loved the outdoors, loved to hunt. He had encyclopedic knowledge in many fields. He also loved good food and wine, and books. He was unflaggingly generous to many people, institutions, and causes. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Dr. Margaret Yates; his children Katherine, Gregory, Peter, and Eugene; and by seven grandchildren. He is deeply loved and missed. A memorial service celebrating Dr. Yates' life will be held at his home on Saturday, February 28.

Gene Yates was my best mentor, teacher and friend. Gene made it possible for me to expand my research interests in biochemistry and physiology. When I was ready to explore research interests different from Gene's, he provided me with introductions to other labs in which I was able to do independent work. He and Margaret were constant friends and I was a beneficiary of their many kindnesses.

If in life you could have only one mentor, teacher and friend, Gene would be my choice.

My deepest sympathies to Margaret, Katie, Greg, Peter and Gus.

In Boston, Gene gave me physiology and I owe him a long-lasting debt for that, it gave my work for life that I loved. Gene and Margaret welcomed us to California by suggesting first that we stop at Fallen Leaf on our way from Princeton to Stanford and then by letting us stay in their house at Stanford while we found a place to live. Our lives were entwined for a number of years through Stanford and permanently through Fallen Leaf. At Stanford, in Gene's lab were Greg and Katie taking care of the rats (that lived in the lab). It was a great deal of fun in that lab because of Gene and his questing head and sense of what's interesting. He contributed mightily to thoughts about the endocrine system and advanced the field from description to modeling. We will all miss him.

He was a shining light in our lives. I loved every conversation I had with this brilliant and caring man. What an honor to have known him and learn from him.

Gene has been practically a family member for many years. We dearly loved him. I especially loved him and told him so many times for bringing us to warm Sunny California from Cold East Coast. Have adored his whole family. love Helene Iberall
