George Stoneman Obituary

George Beattie Stoneman, M.D., a fourth generation Angeleno, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2021. He left this life surrounded by family at Good Samaritan Hospital, the same hospital where he was born on February 18, 1940, and where he spent almost four decades practicing medicine, mentoring, and advocating for the hospital's patients and staff. He was comforted by the caring support from his life-long colleagues during his short struggle with fast-moving melanoma. Earlier this year, at age 81, he was still practicing medicine, playing tennis, taking great photos, and exploring California on weekend road trips with family. He was the kindest man one could know, adored by his family, respected by his peers, trusted by his patients, and loved by all who knew him. He grew up in Hermosa Beach, CA, the son of George and Frances Stoneman, attended Mira Costa High School and spent many years bodysurfing in the waves off 22nd Street. He attended Stanford University as an undergrad, followed by USC Medical School, where he earned his M.D. in 1965. Since 1972, Dr. Stoneman was the ear, nose, and throat doctor to countless loyal patients at Good Sam, St. Vincent Medical Center, and Keck Medicine of USC. From 1966-1968, between graduating from med school and entering his residency in Otolaryngology, George enlisted in the Air Force as a Captain in the Medical Corps, where he served as flight surgeon for the 421st Tactical Fighter Squadron of F-105 pilots, based in Korat, Thailand during the Vietnam War. George was dedicated to philanthropy, and for many decades he generously supported mentoring and fundraising for Keck School of Medicine at USC and Good Samaritan Hospital. George was a loyal supporter of many organizations, including the LA Zoo, several botanical gardens, and the U.S. Adaptive Recreational Center in Big Bear Lake. George married his wife and lifelong adventure partner Laurie Pallette in 1968, and they recently celebrated their 53rd anniversary. George's many interests included skiing, boating, nature travel, gardening, Trojan football, and especially photography (check out his photos at georgestoneman.photodeck.com). George and Laurie loved entertaining friends and family at Naughty Pines, their cabin in Big Bear Lake. Many friends also know George from the Jonathan Club, LA Tennis Club, Southern Skis and Men's Garden Club of Los Angeles. George was passionate about his family history, giving enlightening talks on his great-grandfather General George Stoneman, who fought for the Union in the Civil War, settled in Pasadena, and later became the 15th Governor of California from 1883 to 1887. George was a sincere and soft-spoken man who made a big impact on the people who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife Laurie, son Josh, daughter Heather, brother Bob, and so many extended family members, friends, colleagues, and patients, all of whom he cared about deeply. Dr Stoneman performed a tonsillectomy on me in summer 91 at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was an outstanding surgeon and treated me for assorted other things such as allergies and bronchitis too. My quality of life was outstanding after he treated me and removed my tonsils. We even discussed religion and college football. An outstanding surgeon and an even better human being

I was a patient of Dr Stoneman in 1980. He was very warm and extremely competent.
His diagnosis was fast and bang on during my first appointment. The procedure performed subsequently, inferior turbinectomy, provided me great relief.
Deepest condolences to his family.
I offer my respects to the departed soul.

George was a friend from the Jonathan club as well as my doctor. He was a wonderful, talented, soft spoken, caring man. He was a wonderful friend and he will be missed. Some people come into our lives and quickly go, others stay awhile and leave their footprints in our hearts and we are never the same. George was truly a man for all seasons. My prayers and best wishes to his family. Tom Higgins
