The first time our sister, Carol, brought Bill to our mother's home in San Jose for a family gathering, he was wearing a burgundy colored polyester suit and white shoes. We were surprised that our sis, always the pinnacle of S.F. Bay Area fashion had brought this version of SoCal chic home for the holiday.
Bill quickly learned a classier way to dress and in turn taught us a classier way to live. What was that unique genius Bill had that instantly attracted you to him no matter how disparate your views, your age, your religion, your ethnicity, your walk of life?
When you met Bill, you felt that he instantly accepted you, unconditionally, for who you were at that moment. When you have nothing to prove, it makes you feel great--free to accept yourself, a fresh concept for many of us. We will remember a dichotomous man: Bill's ease was his grace; Bill's warmth was his coolness; Bill's naivety was his sagacity; Bill's acceptance was his strength

Bill was a great guy, always had a smile on his face and a helping hand. He was a leader with many ideas up his sleeve for improvements and continuity. We knew him best for his involvement in Wanderlust Ski Club. Our best to Carol and his family.

What a mentor Bill was for our Wanderlust Ski Club. He was always there for anybody or for a task that needed to be done in the club. We are naming our annual ski race in honor of Bill as he had such passion for skiing. We all loved Bill and will keep him in our hearts.

Bill Kirkwood had two careers. One with the County of Orange, and the other serving, enhancing and protecting the benefits for County retirees throughout Orange County and the state of California. He was a skilled and talented volunteer.

Mrs. Kirkwood: I spoke with you at Floyd McLellan's memorial service, May 10. I admired your courage for coming to represent your husband at that service. We both know how special those County employees are. I wish to offer my sympathy and love and prayers that you will know the peace of God at this difficult time. (My husband, Winston passed away April 17.) Blessings to you and your family.

I didn't meet Bill Kirkwood until after my retirement when I joined REAOC. He was so knowledgeable about county affairs and I always felt he had our interests at heart. I looked forward to seeing him at the luncheon meetings. He will be missed.

Dear Kirkwood Family:
I knew Mr. Kirkwood when I worked for the County GSA as a secretary. He always had a smile and a hello, even for "just" a secretary, and I appreciated that about him. Later, as a retiree myself, his hard work for the REAOC was also appreciated. My heartfelt sympathy to all of you for the loss of a very special person,
Linda Jones (aka Moquist)
