Harvey Weintraub Obituary

January 19, 1929 - February 2, 2017 Dr. Harvey Bernard Weintraub, died on Feb. 2nd at home, at peace and surrounded by loved ones. The only child of Betty and Lou Weintraub, he was born in Brooklyn, NY. As a teenager in the military he visited Hiroshima for what was a life altering experience. After graduation from UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco School of Medicine, he returned to Los Angeles for psychiatric residency at the Wadsworth VA/Cedars of Lebanon Hospital and psychoanalytic training. Galvanized by his Hiroshima experience, he combined private practice and teaching at USC, Cedars and the Psychoanalytic Institute with political action by participating in a human-rights fact-finding mission to El Salvador, providing pro-bono treatment to torture survivors and raising funds for medical treatment of Vietnamese children ravaged by the war. As a teacher, he was known for making his students feel welcomed and valued. As a psychoanalyst, in addition to healing patients, he played a pivotal role in the reunification of the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute with the Los Angeles Psychoanalytic Institute. An avid traveler, sailor, scuba diver, runner, skier and amateur pilot, he loved music, theater and USC football. He was known for his passion for life, keen mind and sparkling sense of humor. He was a compassionate, generous man who faced the devastating diagnosis of dementia with courage and grace, remaining an active engaged participant in his life until his last breath. He was most defined by his love for family and friends. He is survived by Helen, his beloved partner of 35 years, daughter Allison (Randy), son Jory, daughter Danielle (Eric), and grandchildren Katie, Claire, Carly, Max and Emily. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Harvey's name to either CARECEN (The Central American Resource Center, www.carecen-la.org/donate) or OPICA Adult Day Care Services (www.opica.org/donate-now). Service will be held on Friday, April 7 at 11:00am at the Annenberg Community Beach House (415 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, 90402).
