Helen Borkowski Obituary

BORKOWSKI, Sister Helen, RSHM
A Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary for 56 years, Sister Helen Borkowski, died on May 22, 2006, at Regina Residence in Orange. Born Clara Borkowski, in the Bronx, New York, in 1932, she made her Novitiate in Tarrytown, New York. She received a BA from Marymount College, Los Angeles, an MA from the University of Southern California and pursued doctoral studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, all in the fields of history and political science. She received a Life Teaching Credential, kept up in her professional field with post-graduate work at Georgetown University, and the Washington Theological Union, in Washington DC. She spent the early part of her teaching career at St. Catherine's School, Brooklyn, St. Francis de Sales School, Sherman Oaks and Corvallis High School, Studio City. She spent twenty- seven years as a professor of history and political science at Marymount Palos Verdes College. She also served as Department Chair, and Chair of the Inter-Semester Program. Sister Helen will be remembered as an avid reader, a good debater,a challenging professor. After her active teaching years, she transferred her love of history and skill at research to working as the Archivist of the Western American Province of the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary . Sister Helen will be greatly missed by her RSHM Sisters, her brother John and his wife Fay, her nephews, Michael and John, her students, her many friends, especially in the Palos Verdes and Westchester areas. Mass of the Resurrection will take place on Friday, May 26, 2006, at 10:00 a.m., at Sacred Heart of Mary Convent Chapel, RSHM Provincial Center, 441 No. Garfield Avenue, Montebello, CA 90640. Burial will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, 5835 W. I wish your health had allowed you to participate in the Corvallis Class of 60's 30th and 45th reunions! I think you would have enjoyed meeting as "adults", just as we would have had meeting you .
