I am also a former student of Ms. Stringos (1992-3 LACES Spanish II class). I Just randomly thought of her this Christmas Eve morn. She was however a very memorable and fun teacher. To this day, I can envision her standing at the front of the class and enunciating "ESTACIONAMIENTE" (parking lot). Ironically, as a black woman that never mastered the language, "estacionamiente" is the ONLY Spanish word that I pronounce like a native ....lol. May God Bless her loved ones!

RIP Ms. Stringos!!! One of my most favorite & influential teachers at LACES (1998-2004). You used to keep me and Brandon Gooden in check! Lol! & oh how I miss spending almost EVERY lunch break in your classroom.. dancing my heart away! Thank you for allowing so many students the space to be themselves & to feel loved. You ran across my mind a few minutes ago, which is what has brought me here right now. Not even realizing that this month marks 10 yrs since you've transitioned. I LOVE YOU, MS. STRINGOS!!! Mrs. Stringos, I was a stage crew student in her drama class at L.A.C.E.S. 2000 and our teacher was Scott Hitchings. Mrs Stringos was passionate in regards to theater, drama and wanted only the best for her students. Her name ran threw my head today as it always does because she made an impact on my life. Man the Little Mermaid rehearsals and making sure the lights were jut right and the curtain opened and closed just at the right time.
Mrs. Stringos you are missed.

I just found out about Helen's passing. I have tried to find her for a few years now. Helen was the greatest friend. We attended North Hollywood high and LA Valley College, taking music and dance classes. Helen was my maid of honor. Last contact was in 1981. I'm so sorry to hear of her passing. She was a classy lady who had great passion for her work and students. I wish I had seen you one last time. My condolences to husband Gerardo.

Helen was my fifth and sixth grade teacher. She introduced me to a world of music in the service of community. Some of my fondest memories are of preparing Xmas carols and then going to convalescent homes to sing for the infermed. One of the places we would frequent was the place her sister Betsy was at-Rancho Los Amigos. For the last three years I have done the same in her honor. The Stringos Soul stirrers are now doing the very same thing! I think of her on these days and what she taught us. My brother Gabriel, Claudia and Karla all remember her with so much love. My niece Annie (Gabriel's eldest daughter) was also mentored by Helen. Feeling blessed to have known Helen! Love you Ms. Stringos! La quiero mucho. Im sorry I didn't hound you down more often. You never know when someone you love and had such a huge impact on you is going to leave this world.

With the passing of my grandmother on Wednesday, I couldn't help to think of Helen. My grandmother was my first mother and Helen was my second. I remember years ago when I was in Chorus at L.A. Center for Enriched Studies, my grandmother and I volunteered to make these beautiful red dresses for all of the members of chorus. In returned Helen ordered the most delicious turkey as a gift to my grandma and indeed she did enjoy it. We were truly a chorus family. Helen was THEE MOST INFLUENTIAL person in my life next to my grandma. She was the only person that exposed me to a life that I could see happening for myself, theatre, dance, the performing arts. She played a huge part in molding and shaping me into who I am continuously growing to be. Looking back I know she believed in me and took special care with me. Before I met her officially, I would hear so much about her and just watch her walking across the school campus in cute little outfits, ruffles and tights and I would just think about how interesting and intriguing she was. I am so glad I came to know her. I will never forget all that she did for me.

I have just heard of the passing of Mrs. Stringos, and I am speechless. She was my advance dance teacher from 9th to 12th grade. She was a remarkable woman, who was also compassionate and knew how to always challenge her students. Not only was she one of my favorite teachers she was also a role model. Mrs. Stringos you will truely be missed. God Bless

Marion Collins - Principal LACES (retired)
August 24, 2010
I am speaking these words on behalf of the staff and students at L.A. Center for Enriched Studies magnet school. In all my years as a principal I have to say that if asked to select one person who exemplified everything that was good and desirable in a teacher, I would have to name Helen Stringos-Arias. She was creative, talented, responsible, and possessed a warm and generous spirit. Helen loved young people, she loved teaching them and they loved her. She was willing to take both the most talented youngsters or the most difficult ones under her wing. Counselors often had to explain to parents why their child could not take four classes at the same time from Ms. Stringos since she was teaching drama, choir, dance and Spanish. She was a person of the highest moral character, who brought out the talent of every student she instructed. I trusted her whether in the classroom or taking them on field trips to New York. Just ask Daniele D'niese, (a now famous opera singer), or Leonardo DiCaprio, (the world renown movie actor). Leonardo was enrolled in her drama classes from 7th through 10th grade, yet he remembered to send her a beautiful fruit basket many years later upon her retirement from LAUSD. Helen was always willing to present an outstanding, sold out performance, both at the school site or in the community in such places as the Senior Citizen Center during the year, and the Mid-City Chamber of Commerce during the Christmas Holidays. She was truly a gift to the school from the time Wayne Moore brought her to me for an interview. One of the main reasons why LACES was named a National Blue Ribbon School and a California Distinguished School, was because of the strong Performing Arts Program which Helen created over the years. Farewell Helen, we will miss you, but we know that you will continue to make music on the other side.

Helen- It was a blast being on the Jr. chior at St. Sophia's and all the great Mother's Day and Christmas shows along with the retreats at the camp near Lake Arrowhead you directed. Not only did you help us sing in harmony but you taught us to stand up in front of crowds and sing our hearts out. You inspired us even though we clowned around alot. You opened our eyes to Broadway and opened me to all types of music and film, like when you took us to see The Jazz Singer. Somewhere I still have a casette tape of one of our christmas shows. I listen to it from time to time and reminisce. Thanks for the memories Helen and we'll miss you.

Mrs. Stringos - Your laugh was infectious -- so many years later, I can very clearly hear what it sounded like. You were an inspiration to me and to many others, and I take some solace from my knowledge that you loved what you did. I still find myself singing songs (mostly in the shower) I learned from you. Just the other night I sang Jacob's solo from "Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" to my older daughter. That part was the first of many memorable parts and experiences I had - thanks to you - in play production class and trips to NYC. My daughter liked what she heard and directed me to sing it again. The next time I sing it - like the first time I sang it - it will be for you. I will miss you.

Ms. Stringos, what can I say? You were the reason for my enrollment at LACES. Chonique, my cousin spoke so highly of you, that I just had to see what the excitement was all about. Advanced Dance in Fall of 1992 changed and shaped my life. You were a phenomenal teacher making sure to guide each of us on our own paths. You nutured my passion for the arts like no other and I am so grateful for that. Helen,
Rest in peace. You loved music, dancing and people. Is it any surprise where your path led?
The picture in my mind will always be of you dancing at the May Dance Festival at Colfax Elementary and skipping home with my Marie when you came over to our house after school, if mom was held up at Philoptohos meetings.
You are probably both up there chuckling about it right now.
Eternal be your memory.

In 1984, Boyle Heights in a poor and predominantly Mexican immigrant neighborhood, Lorena St School thrived! At the height of Reaganomics and a time when individuality or the institutionalization of individualism was thriving in government and media Helen Stringos lived a different way. She dedicated herself to her community. To be more specific she dedicated herself to the children of her community. Day in and day out Ms. Stringos created afterschool activities revolving around her love of all things the Arts. Not only was she an excellent teacher, she was also a wonderful singer, songwriter, and performer! Using art to inspire youth, in her lifetime she united, healed, and in the process created communities around music, dance and drama. Folklorico, Christmas caroling for convalescent homes, La China Poblana, dinner theatres, Christmas in Sherwood, The Wizard of Oz, Saturday conservatory; these were some of the many activities Helen made her kids a part of. Ms Stringos-Arias was a godsend in our lives. I think I speak for all my brothers and sisters when I say that Ms. Stringos came into my family during one of the most turbulent times. Music and the arts became more than an afterschool activity or fun skill to learn. It became an emotional and spiritual salvation. Ms. Stringos mentored my brother (Gabriel Gonzalez), sister (Claudia Gonzalez) and myself, but also, the generation that followed as my eldest niece (Annie Gonzalez Gabriel’s daughter) attended LACES. Two generations affected by one woman’s hand whose legacy will continue to inspire youth well into the future. Ms Stringos-Arias, thank you for the teachings, the patience, the time, and love you so generously gave to me, and my family!! We love you!!!

Helen...I remember you telling me that I would grow up to do great things. As your student in elementary school and Saturday conservatory you pushed me in many different ways...academically, artistically, musically, dramatically. I will forever remember how much you demanded of us and expected of us. You pushed us in ways we didn’t even think we could grow and we did! To this day I am still inspired by your belief in us and in your high expectations for us. I would have not made it through UCLA and graduate school if you had not instilled in me a sense of pride and an academic work ethic unlike any other teacher I ever had. Beyond that, you loved us and we loved you right back. We’ve lost a great educator, mentor and friend but heaven has gained an angel like no other! Thanks for everything!!

I wish I had more time to really get to know you more.... I have so many questions to ask you!!!! As a passionate theatre/dance/music/art individual myself (and teaching) I understand the beauty your gifts have left behind that will always live in the hearts of your students and people whom you touched! Even though I only knew you for such a short time, I felt a "bonding" with you to share your passions and will feel your "whispers" from heaven as I continue to work on your book. I am sure you are passionately directing plays in heaven and I cannot wait to join you some day where I can really spend eternity with you and maybe work with you (up there).... :)) It is comforting to know that I will have a friend in the "theatre/dance/music" department of heaven when my time is up on earth. Until then.... rest in peace and I will think of you often as I illustrate the book that was dear to your heart! You are missed and will be remembered as your legacy lives on.

I had the pleasure of getting to know Helen these past 2 years in Ocean Shores. I spent time taking care of her two dear dogs Oliver and Baron, in the loving home that Jerry and Helen built together here on the coast of Washignton.
When Helen and Jerry returned from traveling, I loved listening to Helens spirited voice, as she described in detail their latest getaway. Whether it be Europe, Hawaii, or just around the bend in Ocean Shores, Helen found beauty and excitment in places, people, and animals. I will miss her graciousness and kindness, along with her style and love.
I'm grateful to have known Helen. She's in my heart.

You have my heartfelt condolences on the passing of Helen.
Those of us who had the good fortune to grow up at St. Sophia and participate in its Jr. Choir will never, never forget or stop appreciating Helen. She will live with every note of the Doxology we sing or hum; notes indelibly impressed into our brains through her determination.
Helen opened up her treasury of talents to us and we were all made rich through her generosity. Rich with experiences, knowledge and the fondest of memories.
